Notes:

Genie as he was know by his brothers and sisters was a farmer in Okla. he also
had a Leather Smith shop for a short time in Okla. before traveling to and
working in California at a furniture factory.
He returned to Okla. where his 2nd wife was still living and divorsed her and
returned to Calif. where he remarried. He died in Calif. and was returned to
Okla. where he was placed to rest in Providence Cem. beside other members of
his family. His 2nd wife was his adopted sister.

Eugene married Florence Duncan, Floy 1904, Canton, Tx.. Florence (daughter of Marion Josiah Duncan, Si and Elvira R. Davis, Ellie Duncan) was born 07 Sep 1887, of, Van Zandt, Tx; died 07 Nov 1965, ,Chickasha, Ok. [Group Sheet]

History of John Duncan of Laurens Co., S.C.:

"Native Americans or American Indians,m were the first known inhavitants of
the area now known as Laurens Co..
The chreokee Indians, members of the Iroquo9is nation, lived and hunted in the
western and central piedmont of S.C..
Many Indians arifacts have been unearthed in the areas along the Enoree River,
Bush River, and Rabon Creek.
Early settleres to the western piedmont area of the Carolinas came down
through the backcountry of Pennsylvania, Marland and Virginia and were
Scottish-Irish.
The first known White settler to arrive in what is now Laurens County was
JOHN DUNCAN in 1753.
JOHN DUNCAN .... from Aberdeen, Scottland, spent a few years in Pennsylvania
before moveing south.
He liked the lush vegetation and abundant wildlife he found in this area and
settled around a creek in the northeastern section of the country not far from
the present city of Clinton.
John Duncan built a rustick house, a few outbuildings, a distillery, and
organized a chruch. He brought the first African slave and the first
horse-drawn wagon into the area. Of course, the creek near which he settled
is known today as Duncan's Creek, and the chruch, still in existence, is the
Duncans' Creek Presbyterian church, the oldest church in Laurens County and
one of the oldest Presbyterian churches in the backcountry...."

The Prather family were also early settlers in what is now Laurens Co., S.C.
and also lived along Duncans Creek.

*Riley was a hard working farmer. His farm was located near Van, Tx.
One morning he left his home to check his livestock, which was pastured
nearby, when he did not return the family and friends searched for hin all day
until late in the evening, when they found him near a creek bank in his
pasture, he had died of a heartattack. He was 70 yrs. old.
Devout member Odd Fellows,(Pruitt Lodge#797) which ordered black arm bands to
be worn for 30 days to morn his death.(Edgewood Enterprise News)

Marion married Elvira R. Davis, Ellie Duncan of Denton, Tx. Elvira (daughter of Richard Magafio Davis and Elizabeth Hurst) was born 10 Jun 1864, Afton, Cedar Township, Dade Co., Mo.; died 04 Jan 1949, Sulphur, Murray Co., Okla.; was buried , Ninnekah Cem., Prather Family Plotts. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

Elvira was of Cherokee/Choctaw Indian and White descent.
Her mother was fullblood Indian.
The Duncans and Prathers had left Smith Co.,Tx. and worked their way
into Ark. There may have been other allied families traveling togeather.
They later left Ark. and made their way accross Indian Territory and prepared
to cross the Red River at a point that is now Gainville, Tx., it was November
and Mr. Duncan had a bad cold. When they crossed the river Mr. Duncan became
very ill and died of Neumonia. (he was buried on the bank of the river---
the grave has sense been washed away.)
Mrs. Duncan,having severial children,wanted to leave the wagon train and
return to Van, Tx. where she had relatives that could help her. Riley desided
to help her.
Riley had severial children to care for, because his wife had
died before they had left Tx. years earlier.
They headed their three wagons eastword toward Van in Smith,Co. and settled
there. Later they were married and had two children of their own.
They had a total of 21 children between themselves and their former spouses.
They continued to live in Smith Co., Tx. and farmed near Van, Tx. until Riley
died. Elvira then went to live with her daughter Artie (Prather)Brown in Okla.
Rileys son Eugene Franklin Prather married one of the Duncan daughters, Floy.
Eugene and Floy were not blood related, but the two children born to Riley
and Elvira were half brother/sister to both of them. This information was
given to me by Artie Prather (Brown) who was one of the two children born to
Riley and Elvira. Artie was my Great Aunt, --- Eugene and Floy were my

In the 1880 Dade Co., MO. census, Elvira is listed living with her
brother-in-law, John Eaton. They were living in Cedar Township, Dade Co., MO.
and she was listed at age 16.

Many of the Davis,Post,Duncan, and Prather family are buried at Cornith Cem.
near Van,Tx.
Elvira, after Rileys death, was mid-wife to Mrs.Post when her son Wyle
Post (the Aviator) was born. She cared for him as a baby.
