Notes:

Samual was born in Pickens or Pendleton Co., S.C., we are not sure which
because of the changes that took place with the boundries.
He went with his father to Hall Co., Ga. as a young man. Later with the
outbreak of the Civil War he went to Alabama where other members of the family
and allied families had established themselves. He married at Gunters Crossing
(a ferry crossing) which is now Guntersville, Al.

When he went to Alabama, his brothers Erb Boyd Prater and Thomas Prather went
with him, later they came to Jamestown, Smith Co., Texas where they
were listed as Confederate Soldiers. He was also a Minister and farmer.
His younger brother, Thomas was only 19 yrs. old when he died while living in
east Texas (Smith Co.) His other brother "E.B." (Erb Boyd) went back into
Arkansas where other Prater/Prather relatives had moved much earlier
(desendants of Phillp III Prater, their uncle and others), he later returned
to Smith Co., Tx.
Samuel spent the remainder of his life as a farmer in Jamestown,Smith Co.,Tx.
Other members of his family in Ark., Al., Ga., and Tenn. came into Texas.
Some of which were Praytors, of Sumter Co., Al., Praters/Prathers of Tenn.,
Prathers of Ga., and Praters/Prathers of Ark.-- also many others from various
other states as they made their way west.
One of his sons Riley Benton went North into Ark./Okla./Tx., another Soloman
Bowden and Samuel went into West Texas, near Midland and the other, John Ellis
went into N.Mex., near White Sands where he and his sons had large ranches.
Samuel had younger brothers and sisters that continued to live in Hall Co.,Ga.
and were heirs to their father Joseph's estates, except Joseph II who moved
to Texas, Okla., and then to the State of Washington.

When the Civil War began, some of the series of frontier forts aligned north
and south across the center of the state were closed becasuse of army manpower
problems. The Comanches were already on the warpath and had committed a
particularly bad massacre in Montague Co. north of Smith Co., on the Red River
As indians began raiding deeper eastward into there former lands, white
settlers had to either band together and go about their farms and fields with
guns ready, or move back east.
In addition to this threat, it may have proven premature economically to raise
and market cotton and other cash crops in the blackland soil belt before the
arrival of the railroads.
Even Smith Co., where the light, acid soil was easlily worn out by continuous
planting of the same crops, cotton was not an important cash crop until a
short-lived steamboat port, Belzora, was established on the Sabine River wher
the Tyler-Hawkins road bridge is today. After the railroad came to Smith Co.,
supplanting the river as the main bulk freight route, the land was already
largely depleted - forcing farmer to again move west or to change to other
crops.

It appears that Samuel and his brothers experienced a great reduction in
their life style compared to their anscestors. This was probably due to
the out come of the Civil War, the loss of slave labor, and the hard pioneer
life experienced in east Texas. An example of his hard life can be seen by
his early death at 49 years of age. He helped to establish Jamestown,Tx. which
is now a small community. It once was a very large comunity near Lindale, Tx.

Samuel married Nancy Tunnell 1841, Gunters Crossing, Ala.. Nancy (daughter of D Perry Tunnell, Rev and Catherine Self) was born 27 Sep 1821, Jefferson Co., Ala.; died 18 Jan 1894, ,Smith, Tx; was buried , Antoach, Smith Co., Tx.. [Group Sheet]

Notes:

The Tunnel name was an English variation of the French name Tonnelier.
Mr. Tunnel was a Frenchman who married a noteable English Lady. "Lady" Ann
Howard. She was descended of the Howards, Earls of Northhampton, Viscounts of
Bindon, Viscounts and Earls of Stafford in England, this family is of the most
noteable noble families in England.
Lady Ann Howard lived to be over 100 yrs. and was still addressed as Lady Ann
until her death in Tenn.
The Howards also married to other allied families that the Praters were
married to in earlier England. Example: Isabella Howard (ca. 1680's -- who
was descended from Sir William Howard, Viscount and Earl of Stafford)
married Sir John Paulet, Marquess of Winchester. John was descended from
Sir William Paulet, Lord St. John of Nunney Castle, Nunney, Somerset, England.
The Praters received Nunney Castle from their kinsman Sir William Paulet and
Richard Prater owned and lived at Nunney Castle, he died in 1580. His will
names our grandfather, Anthony Prater (his brother) as a Trustee to his
estates (which were very numerous and sizeable) for 6 yrs. until his
son and heir became of age. Richards son and heir was named after his
grandfather George Prater of Latton Manor, Latton, Wiltshire, England.
As stated before, there are many other such allied families of earlier England
that Praters/Prathers/Praytors continued to marry into.

Guillaume Tonnelier born about 1675 in France, with his wife, whose name is
unknown, and a son, settled near Scarbrrough, North Riding, Yorkshire, England
in 1702/3. The name was Anglicized to Tunnel.
Their son, William Tunnel, born ca. 1702/3 in France, married Lady Ann Howard
and then in about 1736 they emigrated to the Colonies in America and settled
near Fredricksburg, Va. Later they moved to Fairfax Co.,
William Tunnel died 28 Dec., 1787. His wife Lady Ann Howard Tunnel died 18
Feb., 1814 (at 104 years old).
One of their sons, Stephen Tunnel was a Methodist Minister married Kezsia
Money in 1776 in Georgetown, Md. Stephen and Kezsia had 10 boys and one girl.
5 of the boys became ministers. One of these sons was Perry Tunnel who married
Catherine Self who was of Indian lineage, and a granddaughter to John Gunter.
In the summer of 1826, when at the age of 39, Perry attended a camp meeting in
Alabama, preached the morning sermon, started home and died before reaching
home only a few miles away.
One of Perry and Catherines children was Nancy Tunnel who married Samuel
Prather.

migration pattern as you Mary Boyd.
Several came from Halifax, VA. to that general area of S.C. then on to the
"Federal Road" across the Cherokee Nation from Hall Co., GA. through what is
not Forsyth, Cherkee, Floyd Co's. GA. into AL.
Is there any additional info. that might be a clue to which of the groups she
might belong?
My GG.Grandfather, Robert A Boyd was in Pickens Dist., S.C. in 1850, and
between 1858/60 moved to Forsyth Co., GA., then in very late 1800's on to Al.
withourt his family.

Phillip Prator, son of Phillip Prator and Margery Hunt, received a Warrant, 23
Aug., 1790, for 238 acres on the head branches of Twenty Three Mile Creek and
Twenty six Mile Creek, surveyed 24 Aug., 1790 and State Grant issued 5 Dec.,
1791. He received a Warrant, 12 Dec., 1790, for 300 acres on branches of 18
Mile Creek, Waters of Keowee River, surveyed 4 Mar., 1791 and State Grant
issued 5 Dec., 1791. Phillip received a warrant 6 Aug., 1791, for 662 acres on
the confluience of Price Creek and Six Mile River, surveyed 8 Aug., 1791 and
State Grant issued 5 Dec., 1791. He also received a Warrant , no date, for 221
acres on branches of 18 Mile Creek, Waters of Keowee River, surveyed 1 Nov.,
1791 and State Grant issued 5 Dec., 1791. These properties were for his role
in the Rev. War, as Soldier in the Army of South Carolina.

Phillip Prater sold to Alenxander Boyse, 6 Mar., 1792, 238 acres on the head
branches of Twenty three Mile Creek and Twenty six Mile Creek, water of
Savannah River, granted to Phillip 5 Dec., 1791. Adjacent property owners were
John Prator and Robert McCann. Whitnesses Robert McCann and Hartwell
Hunnicutt. Proved by Robert McCann, 10 Apr. 1792, Recorded 25 June, 1792.

Robert McCann sold to Phillip Prator, 20 Aug., 1792 701 acres on branches of
18 Mile Creek, waters of Keowee River, granted to Robert McCann 6 June, 1791.

Phillip Prater died in Pendleton Dist. S.C. before 17 Sept. 1798, the date of
his Will was proved.
After his death his widow Susannah Prater (now Hammond) made a declaration,
3 Nov., 1846, excerpts from this declaration are:
She was married to the late Phillip Prater who was a private in the militia of
South Carolina during the war of the Revolution, that he served under Capt.
Maxwell and Col's. Pickens and Anderson. She being very old and infirm, and
unable to recollect what length of time it was, she thinks one or two
years, as she suffered much during the time with her little children,
hiding out and dodging the Tourey and British, that they lived in Laurens
Dist. and afterwards moved to this Dist. near where she now lives and has
resided ever since. She further declares that she was married to the said
Phillip Prater on Haw River in Guildord Co., N.C. by a preacher whose name she
has forgotten, as near as she can calculate about the year 1775/6 on the 16
day of July, and then they moved to S.C. where the said Phillip Prater died
in the year 1797. That she was afterwards married to William Hammond who lived
with her about 2 years and left her, and is as she understands long since
dead, tho' she does not know the date of his death, that she was a widow on
the 4 Jyly 1836 and still remains a widow as will more fully appear by
reference to the proof herewith sent. Susannah Hammond (signed by her mark)

To Susannah Prater (now Hammond), Increase in Phillip's pension, excerpts from
this document are ...... Susannah Hammond formerly widow of Phillip Prater who
dies in the year 1797.... who was a private in the Company commanded by Capt.
Maxwell of the Regiment Commanded by Col. Pickney in the S.C. Military line
for 8 months and 12 days..... inscribed on the Roll of Charleston at the rate
of 61 dollars and 33 cents per annum to commence on the 4th day of March 1831
and end 9 Mar., 1848 when she died.

Col. J.O.Young of Arkadelphia, Clark Co., Ark. wrote a letter to Clerk of
Anderson Dist. S.C. and enclosed a Power of Attorney on the Estate of Susan
Prator, deceased, widow of Phillip Prator, deceased, Jan., 1857, excerpts from
this letter and Power of attorney are:
I have learned from the heirs of Phillip Prator who was a son of the old Lady
Susan Prator and brother of William Prator who the power of Attorney will show
he was the father of my wife, Elizabeth Prater (now Young) and Rebecca
(Middleton) Prater, wife of William Prator, who yet survives and in my house.
We also learned the amount is small and it is or was reported in the
hands of Clerk of Anderson Dist. where the old lady lived, now if this be the
fact I am sure you can comply with the requirements of the enclosed powere
forth with. If it should be otherwise you will confer a vayvor on a distant
by seeing the holder and having the little matter arranged.
You will address Co.. J.O. Young, Buck Creek, Arkansas

State of Arkansas, County of Clark ... I Aaron Prator of the County and State
aforesaind being duly sworn do depose and say that I was acquanted with Susan
Prator who was the wife and afterwards the widow of Philip Prater, deceased
that William Prater was their son and was married to Rebecca Middleton and
died leaving the said Rebecca a widow who still survives and lives in this
county - that the said William left three children only two of whom are dead
without heirs and the third is named Elizabeth and has intermarried with
John O. Young and that the said John and Elizabeth are both living in this
County. I am grandson of Susan Prater and cousin of said Elizabeth.

Rebecca Prator, John O. Young and Elizabeth his wife are informed that they or
some of them the first as widow of William Prator and last as sole surviving
heir of said William are entitled certain funds which come from the said
Phillip Prator on his widow Susan Prator and which are said to be deposeted
for the benefit of person entiled. Now we specially authorize the person in
whose hands the same may be deposited to deposit the same in any safe bank of
the state of South Carolina and take a certificate of said deposit to credit
of person entitled therto and credit the same by mail to us or certain of us
at ARKADELPHIA, CLARK CO., ARKANSAS and this power of attorney together with
the Postmaster of the registering of said letter and its contents shall be
used as sufficient endorse of its payment.

John, Josiah, Joseph, Aaron and Jeremiah Prator, sons of Phillip Prator,
deceased, sold to Henry Hendricks, 21 Dec., 1820, 83 acres on waters of 18
Mile Creek, part of 701 acres granted to Robert McCann and conveyed to
Phillip Prator by deed.

"Mrs. Susannah Hammond, age about eighty nine years, that she was married to
Philip Prather, who was a private in the militia of South Carolina during the
War of the Revolution, that he was or she understood drafted, and served under
Captain Maxwell and either Colonel Pickens or Anderson, or both - she is very
old and infirm, and unable to recollect what she heard him relate of hiis
service. she however, knows he done service for a considerable length of time
in the war, she thinks one or two years, as she suffered much during the time
with her three little children, hiding out and dodging the Tory and British.
That they lived in Laurens Dist. and afterwards moved to this district near
where she now lives and has resided ever since. She further declares that she
was married to the said Philip Prather on Haw River in Guilford County, North
Carolina, by a preacher whose name she has forgotten, as near as she can
calculate about the year 1775 or 1776, on the 16th day of July, and then they
moved to South Carolina where the said Philip Prather died in the year 1797.

Susannah Hubbard was married to "Phillip Prater" by Rev. Mucklejohn at
the old church at Trollingers Ford ..... later known as Haw River, Guilford
Co., N.C. (the old church is still standing ..(1999).

Died at home of her son, Jere. Prather Pendleton Co., Old 96th District, SC)
Married 2nd. to William Hammond, by whom she had two children.
Her husband Phillip Prater was a private under Cap. Robert Maxwell commanded
by Col. Pickins in the Laurens Co., S.C. Mil. line for 9 mo. 12 days Rev.War.
She was the sister of William Hubbard of Guilford Co., N.C.
