If ever a Grandpa walked on water (Mine Did).
Many times I have sat on that old stump of a leg.
He, looking at me with a smile, showing teeth worn away by time.
And I giggling as he flexed the muscles to show me it was alive. When I
thought it was dead, listening to stories of how it was lost.
Indians attcked: They shot me with a poison arrow!
Civil War: Those "Yankees" shot me in the knee!
"There I was, cutting it off with my pocket knife, in an old hollow log."
"While yankee soldiers stomped there horses overhead, looking for me!"
( I could hear the hoof beats as I listened).
Maybe fantasies of a man of seventy seven to entertain his grandchildren.
But wondrous tales of intrigue to a child of six.
Fact: As told to me later by my brother T.C. Prater, son of J.Q. Prater,
son of Christopher C. Prater:
He lost the leg in a hunting accident, circa 45 years of age.
He shot himself in the leg but could not get out of the woods with his leg
"open" and bleeding. He knew he would bleed to death if he did'nt do
something.
The bone was shattered and most of it blown away anyway, so he took out
his pocket knife and finished cutting is off. He put a strap
around the stump that was left and managed to find his way to help.
Later when the family moved form GA. to TX. he rode a horse all the way.Christopher married Eugenia C. Hampton 01 Oct 1885, Moulton, Lawrence Co., Ala.. I heard the stories growing up that she was part Cherokee. However, I've had two Prater aunts and a number of Prater cousins tested and none showed any Native American ancestry.

He was not listed in the 1850 census living with his parents. In 1850 he was
age 16 and living away from home. (prob. a laborer in another household).
1860 census shows him as Lorenzo D. Praytor, Joy Bluff, Morgan Co., Ala.
He is sometime confused with the son of Thomas Prater of Floyd Co., Ky.,
he was also named Lorenzo D. Prater (Prather). He was also called "Ranzie"
