    Notes:

    John joined the newly formed 12th Ala. Confed. Calvery in 1863.
    This would put him at the age of 18. He was musterd out when the 12th was
    disbanded near the end of the war near the North Carolina border. Civil War
    He then moved to Texas shortly after his marriage in 1866/7.
    They settle north of Melisa, TX. and south of Van Alstyne, TX. where they
    developed the land and created a ranch. Then in 1879 they moved to Cross Cut.

    Notes:

    "Louisa Mae" was discribed as a women of very small stature, who was a near
    albino, with white hair and very sensitive white skin. She was also known as
    a very stern disciplinarian.
    Her brother, Jasper Thompson, was an old army buddy of John H. Prater who
    was introduced to her and later became her husband.

    John Prater and his wife and daughter Elizabeth moved from Anderson Dist.,
    S.C. to Benton/Calhoun Co., Ala. in 1834; Also three of his grown sons John,
    James and Andrew moved to Benton/Calhoun Co. in the 1830's ; according to
    records he bought 320 acres on 25 Apr., 1836 in northern Benton/Calhoun Co.,
    ALA. (near Roy Webb School) not far from the present boundaries of Etowah and
    Cherokee Coounties; According to a tax assessement in 1844 he owned 240 acres,
    personal property of $1,350 & 13 Slaves; according to probate records he still
    owned most of the land at his death.

    Records state that he was born in Guilford Co., N.C. but Susanna Hubbard
    Praters pension records show him born in Laurens Dist., S.C. for this reason
    I have shown both on his family group sheet.
