    Accorrding to records James bought 80 acres on 25 Sept., 1838 in northern
    Benton/Calhoun Co., Ala. next to his father's property. He bought 40 acres on
    7 Jan., 1842 of nearby land. He then boutht 40 acrres on 25 Oct., 1845 one and
    half miles northeast of other porperties near Shady Grove Church along Ball
    Play Crk. He also bought 40 acres on 26 Feb., 1847 of nearby land. He bought
    40 acres more of nearby land on 6 Feb., 1849. And finally bought another 40
    acres on 27 Nov., 1851 of nearby land.

    He was listed living in the 29th precin. of Benton Co., Ala. in the 1850
    census.
    The Shipley children were living in several of his brothers households 1850.
    Ben Shipley, age 10, was living in his fathers household.

    He is listed in Pendleton Co., S.C. in the 1790 census. Roll #3 p.82

    John Prater and his wife and daughter Elizabeth moved from Anderson Dist.,
    S.C. to Benton/Calhoun Co., Ala. in 1834; Also three of his grown sons John,
    James and Andrew moved to Benton/Calhoun Co. in the 1830's ; according to
    records he bought 320 acres on 25 Apr., 1836 in northern Benton/Calhoun Co.,
    ALA. (near Roy Webb School) not far from the present boundaries of Etowah and
    Cherokee Coounties; According to a tax assessement in 1844 he owned 240 acres,
    personal property of $1,350 & 13 Slaves; according to probate records he still
    owned most of the land at his death.

    Records state that he was born in Guilford Co., N.C. but Susanna Hubbard
    Praters pension records show him born in Laurens Dist., S.C. for this reason
    I have shown both on his family group sheet.
