Petition to form the new county of Russell Co., Va. Dec., 1785.

Samuel Prater's (Prather's) sons William, Thomas and Samuel Prater are
    listed at Petitioners.

The petition of sundry inhabitants of Clinch River, Mosccasin Creek, Powells
Valley, and others, citizens of Washington Co., humbly represent that your
petitioners are situated from the line of Montgomery as it crosses near the
source of the Clinch River, down the same eight miles; thence to the extreme
settlements of Powells Valley fourty more.
The greatest portion of your petitioners have to travel from twenty five miles
and some eighty or an hundred; moreover are generally interrupted by Clinch
Mountain and the north branch of the Holstein River; the former affording very
difficult passes; the latter much danger and difficulty in crossing it in
spring and after considerable rains; continuous to its souther bank, a chain
of hills almost as difficult as Clinch Mountain; so that great difficulty
arises to your Petitioners not only in attending Courts, but Courts Martial.
And for the extent of schism between our small settlements make it exceedingly
difficult to arrange companies without Subjecting sonme to travel 15 and 20
miles to private mustery. There are two difficulties in the militia law that
principally affect your Petitioners. There are evils small indded to the
feelings we constantly undergo when obliged to leave our helpless families
exposed at so very greast distances to obey the laws of our country. And
however evident the danger may appear to us will not certainly on our failure
of duty plead our excuse. Curcumstance alone is sufficient to claim the human
respect of the Legislature to remove the grievance. We therefor pray your
Honorable House will take our case into consideration and divide the county.
We furthur pray a line may be fixed along Clinch Mountain to the Carolinal
Line; or with the line at present dividing the county into two regiments to
the aforesaid Carolina line; then with the said line to Cumberland Mountain
and Montgomery line and Clinch Mountain, or the aforesaid regimental line for
the new county and southeast of the said Clinch Mountain remain Washington
County; and we your Petitioners as in duty bound will ever pray.

were and what they would inherit. John II was a slave owner and his sons
inherited one slave each in his Will. His daughter, Susannah, seems not to
have inherited any slave, but five shillings instead. the balance of the
slaves went to Eleanorr. In her Will, probated on Feb. 11, 1761, Eleanor named
her three sons (John, Jacob and Thomas) as executors. Jacob rreceived one
slave and Thomas inherited at least two slaves. In her Will, Eleanor mentiond
her granddaughter, Ann Prather and gradsons, John and William Prather. Susanna
may have died by the time her mother Eleanor died, because Susannah is not
    mentioned in her mother's Will.
John Aldridge I, son of George Aldredge and Ann___ was borrn in Norhtumberland
Co., Va. in 1661. He married Eliz.____. He inherited the 350 acre Indian Neck
Manor in Talbort Co., Md. from his brother Thomas in Oct. 1702. John died in
Dec., 1702, and his wife Eliz. died in 1704, her Will being proved on Oct., 7,
    1704.
Their children were John II and Sophia.

George Aldredge, son of Clement Aldredge and Susan Boswell, was born at
Worstead, Norfolk, England, in 1629. It is not known when George moved to Va.
At some point in his live he married and by 1658 was living in Northumberland
Co., Va. On July, 1658, George and Ann sold 100 acres of land, took their
children and moved to Md. near where Thomas Aldridge (George's brother) lived.
In about 1668 George received a 350 acre land grant from Cecilius Calvert,
also know as Lord Baltimore. That 350 acre piece of land was known as Indian
Neck manor. George's Will was proven in Talbot Co., Md. on Dec., 16, 1679. In
that Will george listed his children, leaving Indian Neck Manor to his son
    Thomas

On June 3, 1675, Thomas received a 100 acre land grrand from Cecilius Calvert
(Lord Baltimore), in Blatimore Co., Md.

Clement Aldredge, son of John Aldred and Agnes "Ann" Rolfe, was born at
Worstead, Norfolk England, in 1601. He married Susan Boswell in 1626. Not much

(Clement Aldridge II married Eliz. Tull in 1668 and settled in Northumberland
Co., Va.) (Alice Aldridge m. Samuel Picroft in 1673)

John Aldred, son of Henry Aldred was born in Worstead, Norfolk, England in
1558. He married Agnes Rolfe in 1583. John, at some point in his life, changed
his surname to Aldridge. John, for whatever reason, spent much time away from
his wife and family. Ind fact, so much time away, that his wife thought that
he must have certainly been dead. So she remarried. After this marriage, John
must have returned home, because records indicate that Agnes got into some
trouble with her church for bigamy.
Children: Emma b. 1591 marrried Barhum Seek in 1612
    Clement b. in 1601

Henry Aldred was born in England before 1533. The names of his parent and wife
