Notes:

She was first married to Col. Lemuel Wooten Cade (1810 / 1856)
They had one son, Julius Alford Cade (1839 / 1901).
After the death of Col. Cade in 1856 Hane married a Mr. Aven, who owned
adjoining property in Stewart Co., Ga. All of this land, 3000 acres, was in
Stewart and Chattahockee Coounties, and at Mr. Aven's deather, Jane inherited
all of this property. In Apr. 1884 while living at Cuthbert, she boarded the
river steamer, Rebecca Everingham at Ft. Gaines, on her way to Columbus, Ga.
accompanied by her 12 year old neice, Mary Valerie Simpson. She had a money
belt around her waist containing $15,000.00 in gold and $2,000.00 in silver.
On leaving the D.B. Fitzgerald landing, 50 miles south of Columbus, about 4:45
A.M. on the moring of April 3, it was discovered that the boat was on fire and
since the lower deck was filled with bales of cotton which was very dry it was
soon on fire all over. The boat was run ashore on the Georgia side while the
crew did everything possible to halt the spread of the fire and to rouse the
passengers from their staterooms which were on the upper deck. Most of them
escaped by jumping into the river in their night clothes and swimming to
shore. The boat soon burned to the waters edge. Jane Prather Aven and her
niece were among the ten persons who perished in the fire and she, her niece
nor the money was ever seen again.

Notes:

* Richard was said to be very much a "ladies man", Handsome and interesting
in conversation. Also a great sport at hunting.
He came to Ga. with his parents when he was only 4. In 1828 he moved to Harris
Co., Ga. In 1840 he moved to Green Hill, Stewart Co., Ga.
His Greatgrandson Richard Prather lives there today. (1992) He is a lawer.
Richard Prather owned a plantation called "Change Bank" which was located
in Stewart Co. between Louvale and Cuseta, Ga. on the Chattahoochee River.

Notes:

He settled in a large farm which was later named the site of Prather, GA.
by the Eastern & Elberton Railroad.
The railroad made it a produce stop (cotton & grain).
The railroad maps listed it as "Prather" and later other map makers picked it
up and indicated it on their maps as Prather, GA.
Today nothing is there to indicate that Prather, GA. was ever a community, not
even a sign on the highway which goes through it.
In 1987 there was on small store and about 6 scattered houses mostly inhabited
by black familys.

Prather, GA. is located about a mile or so north of the Washington, GA.
Airport (just a landing strip in 1987).

Jere. moved from Maryland to Wilkes Co., GA. about 1792.

James Prather refused to give a list of his family to the Census Taker (Vol.
1, p.89, G.M. Brumbaugh's Maryland Records.
He signed the Oath of Allengiance in Prince George Co., MD. 1778 (Brumbaugh's
MD. records) Vol. II, p.258.
His Will dated 1 Nov., 1783, proven 22 July, 1791, in Prince George Co., MD.
(Liber T. Folio 306 abstracted as follows:
"To beloved wife all personal estate during widowhood & no further.
To my son Benjamin Prather & heirs a negro boy Bob & no more.
To my son Joseph Prather & heirs negro girl Sills & no more.
To my son James Prather & heirs negro slave called Bick.
To my son Josiah Turner Prather dwelling plantation whereon I now do
dwell...called "Batchelors Forrest", containing 55 1/2 acres more or less also
one other part of Tract of land that my father conveyed to me and one fether
bed & other personalty.
To my daughters and son: Martha Prather, Ruth Prather, James Prather, William
Prather, Ann Prather, Rebeckah Prather....personal estate to be sold and
divided among above.
Note: "Regarding the fether bed devised to son Joseah Turner Prather....
the bed I mean that I gave to Francis Deakins for the purchase of sons land"
-etc.

Joseph lived Bladdensburg, N.Y. until 1792 When he moved to Wilkes Co.,Ga.
James was a Lieutenant in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War.

* Many of his descendents went to Bourbon Co./Bath Co.,Ky and to Indiana.
