    Pendleton Co., S.C. .... "Sold 100 acres of land by peter Lentz (Lance), Sr.
    in Buncombe Co., on 20 Apr., 1802.
    Peter Lentz was the father of Rosana Lentz.
    Land sale in Buncombe, Bk. 7 p.120.
    On 18 Feb., 1807, Buncombe, Book B, p.30, Archeluaus Prater sells this 100
    acres to Jonathan Paris. It is believed that the Praters then moved with
    Lance (Lentz) relatives and others to Warren Co., TN."

    "On motion, Archalous Prater, about 70 years of age, personally appeared in
    open court and made oath that he was acquainted with Joel Mears and in his
    lifetime and that Margaret, (formerly Margaret Estes) and deponet further
    states that on about the 30th Sept., 1827 he being an authrozed minister of
    the Gospel, married the said Margaret to the said Joel, dec'd, and states that
    sometime in the latter part of the year 1835 the said Joel Mears deceased in
    Warren Co., TN."

    Joel Mears died 21 Dec., 1835.

    Arch is listed age 84 in 1850 Census Warren Co., TN.
    Looking at census and other records his listed age puts his birth year
    at between 1766 and 1769. His parents were married in/or about 1768,
    thus it is most likely his birth date is after 1768.
    Note: The only record of his parents marriage is a Will record which
    may or may not show the correct date of their marriage.

    THE WILL OF BASIL PITTS PRATHER

    In the name of God, Amen, I Bazel Prather of Laurens Dist. and the State of
    South Carolina being of sound and desposing mind and memory but weak in body
    and calling to mind the uncertainty of life and being desireous to dispose of
    all such worlly estate it haith pleased God to bless me with do make and
    ordain this my last Will in manner following this is to say;
    I desire that so much of my personal estate be immediately
    sold after my decease to pay debts and funeral expenses.
    I give and bequeath unto my beloved wife Prisilla Prather
    all my real and personal estate and after the decease of my loving wife I give
    and bequeath unto my son heirs of my son John Prather one dollar and I give to
    the heirs of my daughter Abrilla Southerland one dollar to my daughter
    Verlinda Bishop one dollar to my son Archabal Prater one dollar my son Brice
    Prather one dollar the heirs of my daughter Martha Mccrary one dollar and the
    heirs of my son Josiah Prather one dollar my son and heirs of my son Josiah
    Prater one dollar my son Bazel Prather one dollar the heirrs of my daughter
    Rutha Page daughter Prissilla Riley one dollar my son Holaway Prather one
    dollar, and I give and bequeath unto my son King Prather one negro man named

    Prather and my daughter Hannah Adarre after the decease of my beloved wife,
    all my estate both real and personal to be equally divided between my son King
    and my daughter Hannah to them and their heirs forever and the part I give to
    my daughter Hannah Adare to be her and the heirs of her body.
    Executors administratiors and assigns forever and lastley I do constitue and
    appoint my beloved son King Prater executor of this my last Will and my
    friend Marha Mcavary to ackt with my son King Prrather as exetors of this my
    last Will and Testament hereby making all others and former Wills and
    Testaments by me heretofore made in testamony where of I have herunto set my
    hand and affixed my seal this 14 of July, 1832.

    NOTE: This Will replaced an earlier Will which he had made....
    The children that are not listed in his Will were living a geat distance
    from him in other states, thus we believe this to be the reason they
    were not listed in his Will.

    The children that had received one dollar were also not living near him but
    was prob. in closer contact with him than those living at great distances.

    The First Will of Basil Pitts Prather:

    I give and bequeath unto my wife, Priscella, all my land, houses, money, debts
    and moveable effects... during her natural life.
    To my grandson Ephraim Prather, son of King Prather, 50 acres lying on West
    side of the Spring Branch, part of the tract of land I now live on and laid
    ourt by a deed of convayance I gave to him in the year 1825, to him and his
    heirs.
    To my grandson Bazal Adair all my tract of land lying on the East side of the
    Spring Branch which I convayed to him in a deed in the year 1825... to him and
    his heirs forever... I further give my grandson William Adair a smooth bore
    gun.
    I give and bequeath to my grand-daughters, Mary Adair and Jane Adair, a bed
    and furniture to each of them and their heirs, also I give and bequeath my son
    King Prather, one negro man named Tom to him and his heirs forever, Also it is
    my will and pleasure that after my wife's death, my household goods and
    moveable effects of what name or nature soever, be sold on a credit of six
    months... after paying mine and wife's debts, expenses, the whole residue and
    remainder together with what debts may then be dure, be defected between my
    children whose names follow in the following manner, to wit:

    To the children of my son John, deceased, one dollar
    To the children of my son Joseah, one dollar
    To my daughter Verlinda Bishop, one dollar
    To the children of my daughter Rutha Hare on dollar
    To my son-in-law John hare, I give four dollars
    To the children of my daughter Abarill Southerland, one dollar
    To the children of my daughter Martha McCrary, deceased, one dollar

    The children above mentioned have received their part before according to the
    best of my ability and then the residue of the moneys that will be left to be
    equally divided between my other children, whose name follow, to wit:

    To my daughter Priscilla Riley, one dollar
    Also, these undernamed children:
    Archelus, Mary Lynch, Bazal, Hannah Adair, Holloway, Brice.... to them and
    their heirs forever and further, appointing my son King Prather Guardian to
    act for my grandson Ephraim Prather til he shall arrive to the age of 20 years

    commission 31 Mar., 1779, having been appointed 15 July, 1776.

    The actual date of the marriage of Basil and Priscilla is still in
    question. Circa 1766/68.

    His ancestors all had very large families, his descendants are found mostly in
    Tn., Ky., Ga., Ind., Okla., Tx., Mo., Ark., Ala., Ms., Mich., Ca.
    Some use the spelling Prater, Prator, Praytor, Prayter, and Prather.
    He served as a soldier in the Army of the Virgina during the
    Rev. War. He was known to be a large land owner and preacher.

    Bazel married Priscilla van Swearingen of W.Va. or Maryland. Priscilla (daughter of Mr van Swearingen and Sarah van Swearingen) was born ca 1749, W. VA. (prob. Berkley Co.); died Bef 1829, Laurens Co, SC; was buried Bef 1829, Laurens Co, SC. [Group Sheet]

    Notes:

    She is descended from Gerrit VanSwearingen who was born in 1636
    in Reensterdawn, United Netherlands (Holland) and died 1698 at
    St. Mary's City, Maryland.
    He was the youngest son of this family of Noblity.
    He came from Holland to New Amstel (now New Castle, Delaware) in 1655/6
    as an agent for the Dutch West India Co. and was appointed "supercargo"
    on the ship "Prince Maurice", a ship with emigrants and supplies for
    the Dutch Colony in Amercia.
    He was appointed Commissionary General of that colony in 1659.
    He was Councellar or New Amstel 1661/62. Moved to Maryland in 1664.
    He was Sheriff of St.Mary's County 1686/87; member of Council 1694.

    A complete history of him and his family was published in 1977.
