    George W. Prater, a farmer of Hillburn Twp. was born in KY. in 1832, and is a
    son of Jonathan and Margaret (Griffie) Prater.
    The father was born in VA. and when a young man located in Floyd Co., KY.
    where he engaged in farming.
    Our subject lost both parents when a small boy, and when about 16 accompanied
    an older brother to Arkansas, locating upon the farm where he now lives.
    The brother made his home here until his death during the War. He accopanied
    Price on his famous raid through Maryland, and died from the effects of a
    wound.
    George W. Prater lived on White River until the comencement of the war, then
    moved to Texas, where he remained until the close of hostilities, doing
    service in the Confederate Army. He located upon his present place about 1880
    when he returned to Ark. In 1855 he married Melida J. Salyer, a native of KY.
    She bore him 8 children and died 23 Apr., 1876. Her children were named John,
    Mary J., George, William (deceased), Daniel, James C. (deceased), Joseph,
    and Thomas J.
    Mr. Prater afterward married Mary Combs, a sister of Capt. Combs, and a native
    of KY.
    Mr. Prater is a successful farmer of 100 acres of weel cultivated land; is a
    member of the Christian Church, and in politics is a Demorcrat.

    In a letter George W. Prater wrote to James Huff, son of his sister Dicy who
    married Jeremiah Washington Huff:
    Nov., 7 1886 (or 1889 because of poor print)

    Mr. Huff Sur I was glad to recieve a letter from you but it was unexpected
    to me youre letter found us in tolarble helth I am sorry to here that you was
    chilling you say you are going to pay me a visit
    I would like for youre Mother & Father to come with you I would like to see
    them well all tho I have but little recollection about them youre mother must
    be getting very old tel her that I would like to see her once more
    Tel her if she has a chance to come and see me they are bilding a rule road up
    our white river vally they are working on it 7 milds be low me will James
    your nearest and best way is to come to Ozark then you will be in 30 miles of
    this place you would stand a chance to come from there with some wagon so I
    will close for this time by asking you to rite

    The older brother which was referred to as being in the Civil War and was
    stationed in Texas. He was William Hugh Prater, who accompanied Price on his
    raid into Maryland. William died of wounds recieved during these raids.
