Notes:
John was a Cal. Soldier in the Confed. Army during the Civil War.
He enlisted in Ft. Worth, Tx.
15 July, 1861 Muster Roll of Co., #2 (Reserve) Smith Co., TX. 12th Brigade,
Texas Militia under Capt. David Hill.
During his service he went west into N.Mex. with the Confed. expeditionary
force which engages the Union forces stationed in N.Mex.
It was on this expedition that John saw what was to later become his home.
He lived in Smith Co., Tx with his family and at the end of the Civil War
he sold his property in Smith Co. and moved to Big Spring, Tx. where he farmed
for a few years before going to N.Mex. circa 1888.
His son John A. Prather:
John A. Prather married Rose Goodman, who had inherited a large amount of
money and cattle after her father and brother died.
Due to this windfall the family began looking at property on the
Otero Mesa in N.Mex.
After John and Rose divorced in 1922 he concentrated his ranching efforts
in horse and mule breeding.
John A. Prather raised horses and mules and sold many to the Mexican
Government.
He had moved to N.Mex. near White Sands where he remained until his death.
He Acquired a large track of land, which he developed into a ranch. He was
also a minister. He had 3 sons and at least one daughter. One of his sons,
John is the one known in history for holding the government off his land for
over 2 years. They wanted his land due to the White Sands Missel Testing.
