    The 5th Senior Reserves was formed by consolidating two other battalions
    in the summer of 1864.

    A total of 137 men from the Ashe Co., Alleghany Co., N.C. and Grayson Co., VA.
    area served as prison guards at Salisbury, N.C. but Company F served as
    a mounted patrol guard for the Northwestern counties in N.C.
    As can be seen from the roster, few of the men actually wanted to be in
    service, and most were AWOL, Deserted and some dead (mostly due to health
    reasons) when the muster roll was prepared on 28 Feb., 1865.

    Nehemiah Martin Prather was an "Elder" in the German Baptist Church.
    Many Prathers were involved with the "German" families that settled in the
    areas where they lived. In some cases, such as the case of Nehemiah, they
    married into German families and some descendants continue the use of the
    German language. For this reason many have thought that the Prather \ Prater
    families are from Germany, but this is not true........ they are from England.

    He was enlisted in the 7th Regiment (Saunders) Virginia Militia in the War
    of 1812, as a Private.

    He was on the muster roll of Capt. John Trimble's Co. of Inf. 7th Regiment of
    the Virginia Militia 7 Aug. to 21 Sept., 1814 at Ft. Norforlk, Va. as a
    Private. His pay for 1 mo. and 15 days was $12.05

    He was transferred under Lieut. Michael Shively's Co. of Inf., 7th Reg. Va.
    Militia n 22 Sept., 1814 and continued under his command until 10 Dec., 1814
    as a Private (his pay for the 2 mo. and 19 day service was $20.98)
    His rate of pay was $8.00 per month.

    He was then listed on the muster roll of Captain Michael Shively's Co.
    of Inf., 7th Reg. Va. Militia on 11 Dec., 1814 to 22 Feb., 1815 as a private
    and he was paid for 2 mo. and 12 days service $19.42.

    It also listed the distance to his home from Ft. Norfolk as being 400 miles
    and his rate of pay for returning home was $5.32 and was allowed 20 days pay.
    His place of residence was listed as Grayson, Va.
    Later that year (1815) he died as a result of injuries he received in the War.
