    Pension Record: Confed. Soldier, served 1861 to 1865 47th TN.
    The 47th TN. was ingaged in every major skirmish, battle and march that the
    Army of the TN. was involved in, from their baptism of fire at Shiloh,
    to the slaughter at Franklin, to the final battle in North Carolina.
    W.H.Wilkes was a Private in Company H., 47th TN. Infantry CSA.

    Application for Pension: State of Ark., Izard Co., city of Oxford
    last day of service: 1 June, 1865.
    Reason for pension: Statement from Dr. J.H.Smith that W.H.Wilkes is disabled
    due to Himorrhoids, caused by Diarhoea contracted during the war.
    He also has bladder and kidney trouble and severe case of Jandice as a result
    exposure during the war.
    Pension application dated: July, 1903

    The Dr. statement said he was living at Widerman, Izard Co., Ark.
    when he was examined.

    In this application he states that he is now 65 years old.
    He states: "my disabilities, rendering me almost totally unable to work."
    And he included that he nor his wife owned any property, real or personal in
    the excess of the value of $400. (exclusive of household goods and wearing
    apparel)

    His widow applied for Widows Pension on 8 Mar., 1920.
    She did not know how to read or write as provided by the pension application
    showing her Mark (X). The pension application shows her bithday - 14 Dec.,
    1842.

    She died 25 Apr., 1932 with no administrator to her estate.

    In her pension statement she states that her birth year was 1842 but in the
    Yalobusha Co., MS. censes of families living south of the Yalobusha River she
    is enumberated at age 2 years in 1850.

    Under M.S. Wilkes:

    His parents, John and Polly (Halliburton) Wilkes, were born in Virginia and
    Tennessee, respectively, The father was brought to Tennessee when quite young,
    and became a moderately prosperous farmer. He was a Whig and served as
    Magistrate a number of years. He came to Gibson County in 1836 and died in
    1873.
    He served in the Creek War under Jackson, and he and wife were members of the
    Missionary Basptist Church. She died about 1853.

    John Wilkes also served in the Creek Wars under General Andrew Jackson.

    Notes:

    It is thought that the Yarbrough (Yarberry) family came from MS. to Ark. when
    the government opened land in ARK. for Indian settlement.

    In the area known a the Louisiana Territory:
    The first territorial legislature convened at St. Louis 26 June, 1806 and
    created the Dist. of Arkansas, which then consisted of all the present state
    of Arkansas and most of Oklahoma.
    Missouri Territory was created in 1812, and included what is now the state of
    Arkansas.
    Cherokee Indians were granted land in western Arkansas in 1817, and some white
    settlers came with them. Few came into Arkansas from Tennessee unless they
    were of Cherokee blood. Most of the settlers to first come to the now Benton
    Co., Ark. area were from TN., GA., MS., N.C., VA., and KY. The Yarberry's were
    among them.
