    FROM THE GIBSON CO., TN. HISTORY by: Goodspeed in 1887.

    They had 6 children but 3 died in childhood.
    Minor moved to his farm in 1845. It contained 165 Acres of land and produces
    corn, cotton and small grain.
    In 1862 he enlisted in the Confederate Army, serving in the 47th Tennessee
    Regiment, and was 2nd. Lieutenant of Company H. which was the same company
    that his brother, William H. Wilkes served as a Private.

    In May, 1863, he received his discharge, owing to sickness in his family, and
    returned home and began farming. His brother William H. Wilkes continued
    in the civil war until its close in 1865.

    Marcus & his wife were were members of the Missionary Baptist Church,
    he was a Democrat in politics.
    The Wilkes family are natives of England.
    The grandfather came to the United States at an early day and was in the
    Revolutionary War and was present when Corwallis surrendered his sword.

    Under M.S. Wilkes:

    His parents, John and Polly (Halliburton) Wilkes, were born in Virginia and
    Tennessee, respectively, The father was brought to Tennessee when quite young,
    and became a moderately prosperous farmer. He was a Whig and served as
    Magistrate a number of years. He came to Gibson County in 1836 and died in
    1873.
    He served in the Creek War under Jackson, and he and wife were members of the
    Missionary Basptist Church. She died about 1853.

    John Wilkes also served in the Creek Wars under General Andrew Jackson.

    election of Burgesses in Brunswick Co., VA.

    THE WILL OF JOSEPH WILKES:

    In the name of God amen; the twenty-fifth of August in the year of our Lord
    God One thousand seven hundred and Eighty two.
    I Joseph Wilkes of the County of Brunswick do appoint and ordain this my last
    will and Testament revoking all other, my Soul I Recormmend to God that gave
    it, my body to be buried in the Christian manner and for what it has pleased
    God to bless me with I do Give and Bequeath as follows, to wit;

    ITEM: I give to my Daughter sarah Wilkes one negro girl named Lender to her
    and her heirs forever.

    ITEM: I give to my son John Wilkes after the death or marriage of my wife the
    part of the tract of land I now live on; lying on the fork of Gilberts branch
    to the back line, the other part of my land to be equally divided between my
    sons Joseph Wilkes and Thomas Wilkes at the death or marriage of my wife but
    if either of my three young sons should die under age then their land to be
    equally divided between the other two of them or their heirs forever.

    ITEM: My desire is that my negroes should be equally divided after the death
    or marriage of my wife between my children Burwell Wilkes, John Wilkes, Nancy
    Wilkes, Thomas Wilkes, Josephe Wilkes, Minah Wilkes and Frances Wilkes or such
    of them that shall survive the deathe of their mother to them and their heirs
    forever.

    ITEM: I desire that my household furniture at the death or marriage of my wife
    to be equally divided between my children John Wilkes, Betsy Wilkes, Nancy
    Wilkes, Joseph Wilkes, Thomas Wilkes, Minah wilkes and Frances Wilkes or such
    of them as shall then be living to them and their heirs forever.

    ITEM: My stock of all kinds at the death or marriage of my wife to be equally
    divided among all my children then living to them and their heirs forever.

    I do appoint Henry Harrison and Burwell Wilkes and my wife Henryetta Wilkes
    whole and sole executors of this my last Will and Testament IN WITNESS where I
    have here set my hand and affixed my seal.

    This Will was proved by the oaths of Wm. Harrison, Lucey Vaughain and Caron
    Vaughain witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded. and upon the motion of
    Henryetta Wilkes and Henry harrison, tow of the executors therein appointed,
    and they having given bodn with security and taken the oath according to law,
    certificate is granted them for obtaining a probate thereof in due form.

    In the Gibson Co., TN. Goodspeed History of that county it list his great
    grandson and also stated that Joseph Wilkes was a Rev. War Soldier and was
    present when Cornwallis surrendered his sword.
