    In the name of God amen. I Minor wilkes of Lunenburg Co., being old and
    feble, but in sound mind and memory knowing it is appointed for all men once
    to die recommend my soul into the hands of God who gave it, and my body to be
    buried in a Christian like manner and as touching my worldly estate, which it
    has been pleased God to bless me with I give and despose in the following
    manner:
    Item... I give to my beloved wife Ann Wilkes one feather bed and furniture to
    her and heirs forever
    Item... I lend my wife one fourth part of my cattle, sheep and hogs, during
    her natural life
    Item... I lend my wife my land and plantation wheron I now live during her
    widowhood, and my desire is that my two daughers Patsey Winn & Susanna Wilkes
    have a right for a home on the land and plantation lent to my wife as ling as
    they live single.
    Item... I give to my daughter Jincey Winn on negro man Julas to her and her
    heirs forever
    Item... I give to my daughter Ann Winn on negro man Stephen and one horse to
    her and her heirs forever.
    Item... I give to my daughter Patsey Winn one negro girl Mary, and one horse
    and one cow and calf to her and her heirs forever.
    Item... I give to my daughter Susanna Wilkes one Negro boy Dick one horse,
    saddle and bridle and one feather bed and furniture and one cow and calf to
    her and her heirs forever.
    Item... I give to my son Richard Wilkes my Still, only my wife is to have the
    use of it whenever she wants it, to him and his heirs forever.
    Item... I give to my daughter sally Snead the land and plantation whereon she
    now lives I also give her one negro girl Lucy to her and her heirs forever.
    Item... I give to my daughter Mary White fifteen Pounds Sterling, to her and
    her heirs forever.
    Item... My desire is that all my estate not mentioned be sold and after my
    just debts is paid my desire that Minor Wilkes, deceased, Children have sixth
    part of it, equally divided among them and the balance equally divided between
    my five eldest children, John Wilkes, and Thomas Wilkes, Richard Wilkes,
    Elizabeth Winn, Letty White, to them and their heirs forever.
    Item... My desire is that after my wifes decease that all my estate both real,
    personal be sold and one sixth part equally divided between my son Minor
    Wilkes deceased, children, and the balance equally divided between my fire
    eldest children John wilkes, Thomas Wilkes, Richard Wilkes, Elizabeth Winn,
    and Letty White, to them and their heirs forever.
    I also constiture and appoint my son Richard Wilkes & Rennison Tisdale
    executor to this my last Will and Testament in Wit wherof I have hereunto set
    my hand and seal this the ninth day of March, 1809.

    Minor Wilkes lived on a 500 acre tract of land lying in the South Fork of
    Great Hounds Creek.

    His brother, Benjamin Wilkes, also has an inventory of his estate recorded
    in Charlotte Co., VA.
    In Charlotte Co., VA. there is a Will dated 1794 and then we find a Will dated
    8 Mar., 1809..... both for Minor Wilkes

    In 1704 Joseph Wilkes owned 250 acres in New Kent co., VA. on which he paid
    quitrents to the Crown.

    On 26 Aug., 1734 Joseph Wilkes deeded land in New Kent Co., VA. to Richard
    Winn of Hanover Co., VA. retaining right to live there for the remainder of
    his natural life.

    Most likely Richard Winn was a relative - possibly a brother-in-law (making
    Joseph Wilkes wife, Elizabeth a Winn), or a son-in-law.

    Thomas, John, & Joseph wilkes, sons of John Wilks of Shrewsbury, Shropshire,
    England, sentenced to transportation to VA. by Cromwell, their father, John
    said to be executed or transported to VA.

    Thomas Wilkes was imported by Fernando Austin into Charles City Co., Va. on 25
    Feb., 1653, for which a headright was claimed totaling 1200 acres.

    Joseph Wilkes: 25 Feb., 1653 - Transprotation of Joseph Wilks, New Kent Co.,
    VA.

    John Wilkes: 2 Oct., 1655 - Northampton Co., William Stevens - 700 acres of
    land for transportation of John Wilkes.

    Thomas Wilkes participated in, but was not a major party thereto, in Bacon's
    Rebellion in 1676.

    John Wilkes: (prob. father of Thomas, John, & Joseph) 2 Nov., 1648 - Patent of
    George Read, Transportation "John Wilkes". ; patent Book 2 p.165.

    Thomas Wilkes was sued on 14 June 1684 over land in Rappahannock Co., Va. in
    which he was in possession.
    This land was at the mouth of Morattico Creek, and was 600 acres.
    This land was in tenure of Mr. Robert Beckingham and Thomas Wilkes, and was
    claimed in behalf of Giles Cale, deceased, who proported to own it, and to
    have it given as a legacy to Nathaniel Cale, son & heir.

    The name "Wilkes", in Norman times (circa 1066) spelled "Wylkys", originalted
    with those of the name living in "Wylkyshire".... now Wiltshire, England.
    The Gaelic name "Wylk" meant "Wolf", Thus the name Wylkyshire" meant the
    province of the Wolves.
    Wiltshire is a province (county) in centeral England.

    Early bearers of the name Wilkes (Wylkys):

    John de Wilkes of Pouleshale in Wylkyshire (Wiltshire), tem. King Henry III
    A.D. 1216 - 1272

    John de Wilkes II born circa 1258 moved to Hertshire before circa 1312.

    John de Wilkes III born Walton Surrey circa 1312, lived at Moorhouse in
    Yerdelaye, Hertshire, England.

    John de Wilkes IV., Knight; fought in all the King's battles in the first half
    of the 14th Century in Gascony and in France.
    His Coat-of-Arms (these arms undiffereced from the original Wylkys arms) were
    carried at Crecy-en-Ponthieu 1346.
    He was slain in battle under the walls of the city of Calais in 1346.
