    June, 18, 1965 - South Bend Tribune (South Bend, IN.)

    Services for Bruce O. Prather, 85, Lafayette, IN.
    a resident of South Bend for 39 years, who died
    Wednesday night in the Logansport State Hospital, will
    be held saturday afternoon in Williamsport, IN.
    Mr. Prather moved from South Bend three months ago. He
    was born on August 18, 1879, in Royalton, IL. In 1899
    he married Olive Wagner, who died 40 years ago. He is
    survived by two sons, Frederick of Mishawaka and Gerlad
    of Grand Rapids, MI.; 12 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren
    six great - great grandchildren; a brother Charles, of Galveston,
    TX. and a sister, Mrs. Ethel Kiger, of Juniata, NE.
    Burial will be in Riverside Cem., Williamsport.
    He is a member of the Apostolic Temple, South Bend.

    Notes:

    IN 1838, Hiram Prather was treasurer for Jennings Co., IN.
    He was also a Lawyer.
    In 1847-1848, 1849-1850, 1865 and 1867 he represented Jennings Co., IN.
    in the State Legislature and was a member of the Constitutional Convention.

    Hiram Prather was a farmer and in politics he was first a "Whig" and
    later a "Republican".

    Hiram was a Methodist. Church meeting were held at his residence
    until the summer of 1854.

    Hiram fought in the Mexican / American War. He also served in the
    Union Army in the Civil War as did seven of his sons .. Allen,
    Uriah, Alonzo, William, Leander, Walter and John Quincy Prather.
    He was commissioned on 26 Apr., 1861 and mustered in 20 Sept., 1861
    and served until 19 May, 1862 in the 6th Reg., 38th Indiana Vol. Infantry.
    He was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh.

    In his later years he lived in North Vernon, IN.
    Earlier, in about 1850, he built one of the first houses
    in North Vernon, IN.

    He incorrectly stated that his grandfather was from England....... he was
    from NEW ENGLAND, and was a descendant of an imagrant from England.
