- !First known Garwood.His name appears on the Suffolk Co.tax list dated 1674.It is mentioned that he was a mariner.His wife is unknown,One child on record.
In 1674 tax he is listed as sharing a habitation with two hearths with the widow Eccleston.The tax was 2 shillings per hearth and about 80 Garwoods are listed in the return.The non-armigerous patronym of Garwood is derived from the place nam e of Garswood,in Lancashire,West Derby Hundred,Winwick Parish,Aston in Makersfield Twp,near Liverpool.The book of Surnames by Ernest Weekly 1916,it stated the name of Garwood comes from the Anglo-Saxon name of Garthwood.
