    • !Hugh Lupus gave property to William de Malbebeng,or Malbank who was a relative This is important in this is where Philippa Basset got her Property.I will list William as a son-in-law but that is just to keep a connection line.
Some history,Hugh sirnamed Lupus, was created Earl of Chester A.D.1070,in the fourth year of William the Conqueror. The Welshmen or Britons called him Hugh Vras;that is Hugh the Fat.Ordericus,p.769,calls him Hugh Diagane, that signifies in the Wels h language Hugh the Gross;for he was very corpulent. He had land in 20 counties in England.According to Andrew du Chesne, printed 1619,he lists them Hampshire,Berkshire,Dorset,Somerset,Devonshire,Buckingham,Oxford,Glocester, Huntington,Northampton,W arwick,Shropshire,Derbyshire,Cheshire,Nottingham, Rutland,Yorkshire,Lincoln,Norfolk, and Suffolk.
In Cheshire the Bishop of Chester held his land of the King.Hugh Lupus held the rest of the county of the King. All of the other tenants held there land from Hugh.[history of Cheshire p10]
Information on his family is from "the history of Cheshire"p 10-11 Information on the property he owned is on the same pages.place & county.
He was Earl of Chester 31 years. He had Whitby in Yorkshire given him by William the conqueror, which he gave to William de Percy, who founded a Abbey there. He was a principal supporter of Henry I for King.He was also known as Hugh d'Avarnnches,th e king's kinsman.pXXVI.with title of Viscount.
