  • Notes
    • !He was the last of the Barons Malet of Somerset, succeeded his father Gilbert some time after 1189.He married Alice Bassett (Alicia ),the daughter of Thomas Lord Basset,of whose family we learn, that "in subordination to Roger,Bishop of Salisbury,H enry (the first )raised up a set of Novi Homines, many of whom were,in nobility of blood, below the ideal standard of the ruling race, but who, though not among the tenants in chief of Doomesday, were of good Norman descent;of these Geoffrey de Clinto n and Ralph Basset were two of Henry's principal justices;the latter founded a great family. He was one of the 25 Barons at the signing of the Magna Carta. He was in several conflict, some for and some against the King. Collinson informs us that Cur ry Malet, where they had a castle, was the principal residence of the Barons Malet.Curry Malet was held" in Capite "of the King, and Shepton Malet of the Abbot of Glastonbury. Roger de Corcelle had made the two manors of the former into one,so tha t it was a place
of some importance, there are to effigies in the church at Shepton Malet that are believed to be Malet's. The author in company with his brother O.Warre Malet inspected the Tomb at Curry Malet. The descent from his daughter
who married Beauchamp came Jane Seymour, the Queen of Henry VIII,her son,King Edward VI,and the Duke of Somerset the Lord Protector.
