NOTES:
Recorded 23 Oct., 1755 Archives op. cit., vol. 31, pp 79/80
"Negro Thomas, slave of John Prather, conspirred to Poison a certain Richard
Duckett the younger....." (Negro was pardoned.)
This was Richard Duckett Jr., who had several land dealings with John Prather.
Richard Duckett was also one of the Justices for Pr. George Co., Md.
16 Dec., 1768 (Arrchives, op. cit. vol. 32 pp 268 / 313)
John Smith Prather served in the Maryland government (Lower House of Assembly,
out of Frederick Co., Maryland)
He lived in Maryland on "Spriggs Request Plantation" and later
"Deer Park Plantation" and "Bear Garden, Inlarged Plantation".
He was appointed Constable of Prince George Co., Maryland 24 Nov., 1730 and
served until 1733.
John Smith Prather and his wife Elizabeth Nuthall were first cousins.
Their mothers, Martha Sprigg (Prather) and Eleanor Hillary Sprigg (Nuthall)
were sisters.
When his mother died in 1742 he took possession of the 166 acres portion of
"Spriggs Request Plantation" that had been left to him by his father.
In 1743 John inherited the entire estate of John Singleton Goldsmith of
Charles County. We do not know how John Singleton Goldsmith was related
to him, but we do know that George Goldsmith was the guardian of his
grandmother, Lyle Jane MacKay, before she married Jonathan Prather. Also the
Singleton family was intermarried with the Prather family so we can assume
that the Goldsmith family was also connected in some way.
