After this,he never swerved from his loyalty to the King,and establishe d a reputation for integrity,unequalled inthe era in which he lived.On 28th Aug.1242,he was appointed one of the Constables of the Host, then about to set out for Poictou,(Pat.26 Hen.3.p 2.m 3):and in consideration of his service there,had a gran t of the Manor of Kersey,Suff.,20th April 1243, (Pat.27 Hen.3.m 11).On 20 Oct.following,he obtained the custody of the Lands of Maud de Lucy,of Ongar,Essex,with the marriage of the Heirs,(Ib. 2).Ambassador to the Council of Lyons,11th June 1245,( Pat.29 Hen.3.m 5d).On 2nd Nov.125-,he had a grant for free-warren in all his lands in Somers.Bucks,Cantab.,Norf.,and Essex,(Cart.37 Hen.3.m 22).Fought in Wales 1258,(Cl.42 Hen.3.m 11d).He had livery of the lands of his brother Fulke Bishop,2nd Jun e 1259,thus becoming Lord of Wycombe,Compton-Basset,Kirtlington,&c.(Rot.Fin.43 Hen.3. m 7).Constable of Oxford Castle,6th Nov.1259(Pat.44 Hen.3.p 1.m 14).Justice of England 13th Nov.1259(Ibid m 13).Constable of Corfe and Sherborne Castles,3rd Ma y 1261,(Pat. 45 Hem.3.m 13).Sheriff of Somerset and Dorset,Oxford and Berks,Essex and Hertford,and Constable of the Castles of Colchester and Hadleich,9th July 1261, (Ib.m 8)On 13 Aug.Following,he had a grant of 1000 marks per annum to maintain hi m in his Office of Justiciar,(Ib.m 5)He obtained the custody of the lands of William de Beauchamp of Bedford,8th Feb.1263,(Pat.47 Hen.3.p 1.m 17),and on 15th June following,was appointed Constable of Devizes Castle,(Ib.m 8).Sheriff of Wilts.Oxon,a nd Berks.,12th Dec.1263,(Pat.48 Hen.3.p 1.m 20d).He Fought valiantly for the King at Lewes,14th May 1264,being the last of the Royalist to hold the field:and was promptly deprived by the Barons of his various offices. After the Battle of Evesham,H owever,he was not reinstated,probably on account of his years,but on 10th Aug.1270,was appointed Keeper of the Tower of London, (Pat.54 Hen.3.m 7):and on 23rd Oct.following,obtained the custody of the lands and heir of William de Montacute,(Pat.5 4 Hem.3.m 2).He confirmed the gifts of his predecessors to the Priory of Bicester,(Mon.Ang.II.284b n 50).He m.(1) Helewise,dau.of Mathew de Lovine,with whom he had in free marriage,the Manor of Wix in Essex,(Esch.56 Hen.3.No 31).By her he had Issu e.He m.(2),shortly before 7th Nov.1256,Ela Longespe,Countess of Warwick,dau.of William Longespe Earl of Salisbury,and widow of Henry de Newburgh Earl of Warwick,(Pat.41 Hen.3.m 17). He d. 29th Oct.1271,(Esch.56 Hen.3.No 31).His widow,who live d to an extreme old age,d.1300.
