- On 19th Jan.1200,he had a confirmation from King John,of the Manors of Colyton and Whitford,Dev.formerly
granted to him by Richard I;and on the 4th March following.had a grant for free- warren in those manors,(Cart.l
Joh.m 22).Constable of Oxford astle 21st March 1202-Feb.1214,(Pat.3 Joh.m 4; 15 Joh.m 4). On 2nd Aug.1203,he had a grant of the Manor of Headington.Oxon,(Cart.5 Joh.m 21).On 5th June 1205,he had a grant of the custody
of the lands and heir of the Earl of Warwick,and marriage of the heir for the use of his daughter,(Cl.7 Joh.m 25):
and on 24th Aug.following,had seisin of Warwick Castle,and all the lands of the Earl,(Ib.m 16). The next year,he
had custody of all the lands of Walter de Dunstanville,which Gilbert Basset his brother formerly held,(Rot.Fin.7
Joh.m 5):and on 30th June 12--,of all the lands of Geoffrey de Sackville,(Cl.9 Joh.m 18). Sheriff of Oxford,1207,
(Rot.Fin.9 Joh.m 10). On 1st Sept.1207,he had a charter for an annual fair at Colyton,(Cart.9 Joh.m 7).Fought in
Poictou,1214,(Cl.16 Joh.m 24d). On 9th Nov.1215,he had yhe custody of Deadington,belonging to William Malet,his son-in-law,then in rebellion,(Cl.17 Joh.m 17): but afterwards seems to have joined the Barons' party;
for on the 14 July 1216,his manors of Colyton and Whitford were cmmitted to Hasculf de Soligny,(Cl.18 Joh.m 7).
But he soon returned to fidelity and on 24 Aug.1216,was granted the lands of William Malbank,in Clifton,Dorset,
which was of his fee,(Cl.18 Joh.m 4).and on 30th Sept.the land of Reginald Earl of Boulogne,in Chipping-Norton,
and Piddington,Oxon,(Ib.m 1);and had a further grant of Farnham,Surrey,to maintain him in the King's service,
17th March 1217.(Pat.1 Hen.3.m 11).He was one of the commanders in the royal Army at Lincoln,20th May.1217.(M.Paris.III.18). He m.Philippa,dau.of William Maubanc,of Nantwich,Cheshire,(Pole's Coll.for Devon.
p 135; Mon.Ang.II.256b n 50),and by her had issue three dau.his co-heirs,
