  !He staunchly supported Maud the Empress,and fortified Dunster Castle on her behalf.1138.(R.Hoved.I.193), but was eventually subdued by Henry de Tracy.He afterwards besiged Henry Biship of Winchester,the Kings brother,in Winchester Castle.and for his services,was created Earl of Somerset (or Dorset) by Maud,1141(Gesta Reg.Steph.956b).Styling himsel f Earl of Somerset,he founded Bruton Priory,1142.(Bruton Cartul.No 1.He Married Agnes (probably) dau.of Gilbert de Gant,with whom he acquired Whichford,Warwick,which manor was held by Gilbert at Doomsday:and which William and Agnes gave to Bridlin gton Priory,founded by Walter de Gant,Gilberts son.
