Listed in "Maryland and Virginia Colonial Families" : John Bowie, nephew & heir of John Smith of Scotland and Maryland, the latter of whom had married Jane, the widow of Jonathan Prather, & grd-mother of Mary Mullican. Amount disbursements paid from the Estate of John Smith, dec'd., Nov. 3, 1709, was the following: Paid to John Bowie, a legacy to Mary Mullikin who has become his wife. 50. pounds sterling. (Inventories and Accounts, Liber 30, f. 235, Hall of Records). John and Mary (Mullican) Bowie are asserted to have been the grt. grt. grd-parents of the famous "Jim Bowie", of the Alamo.
