  By 1840's Hezekiah owned 830 acres at the south edge of Batesburg on Dunkin (duncan) Branch of Chinquepin Creek. He deeded 124 acres each to his sons, Milton, Wesley, and Mackey. At his death, the remainder was divided into 3 tracts known as the "Homestead Tract" which consisted of 248 acres; Holston Tract, which consisted of 105 acres, and the Lee Tract, which consisted of 110 acres. The Holston Tract was sold to Lewis Gunter of $305. The Lee Tract was sold to Lodowick Hartley, nephew of Widow Ellen, for $875. 6 sons and at least two sons-in-law of Hezekiah Sr. served in the Confederate Army. The war devastated the Prater family. Several of his sons names are engraved on the Confederate War Memorial at the Lexington Co. Courthouse. Those not listed did not serve from Lexington County, thus their names are not listed on this Memorial. Ellen Prater resided with the family of her daughter Elizabeth Jones who owned and operated a hotel in Batesburg. Hezekiah died at age 66. He died as result of 10 days illness of inflamatory bowels.
