  William was Confederate Army Officer: (Civil War) Mustered in 4 Aug., 1863, Thomaston, Ga. as First Lieutenant, Company C., 12th Ga. Cavalry (Robinson's) under Capt. Birdsong's Company (Upson Cavalry) Geneva Squadron; Major Holsey commanding. Later promoted to rank of Major. He took two of his aunts children to raise as they were orphaned:(1850) Draton Whiteman age 12, Hezekiah Whitman age 2. His brother Belton Prator also took two other Whiteman children to raise.
