Notes - John Jackson Prater was known as "Jackson" Prater.
When a young man he was said to have been made to marry his cousin
Nancy Griffith in a shotgun marriage.
After the marriage was completed the Griffith family had him put in prison,
where he was badly mistreated and beaten.
After his release he was said to have bumps on his back from the beatings he
had undergone. He returned to see Nancy and was met with disfavor form the
Griffiths and was soon "run off" by the Griffith family. But not before Nancy
was "with child" by him. She had at least one other daughter, Anna Elvira
and possibly a third daughter. The family is not sure that the third daughter
was by John J. Prater.
Jackson was said not to have returned to the area often and eventually never
returned.
It was only a couple of years later in 1890 that he married his 2nd wife.
We do not have a record of his marriage OR divorce from Nancy Griffith.
His mother & grandmother recieved letters from him while he was living
in Colorado, these letters prove his parentage.
