  !He was the founder of Charlestown,Brook Co.WV.The name was changed to Wellsburg. Charles Prather was in Capt. James Shelby's Company during the Chickamauge Expedition. April 1779. Head of Household Brooke Co., VA. 1810 Charles Prather Henry Prather Maryland Assessment of 1783; Charles Prather, Friendship Manor, 128 acres. WA Cumberland p.10 MSA S1161-10-8. 1/4/5/53 Founded Wellsburg, W.VA. then called Charlestown after him.(Recorded in 1789). Charles laid out the Town that was first called Charlestown and later changed to Wellsburg. He was one of the first to settle there and owned the land. Shortly after it was settled a lady was killed and scalped near the river which the settlement was located on. The Mingo Indians had an encampment on the other side of the river and nearby. Nothing else recorded of this event. !He was the founder of Charlestown,Brook Co.WV.The name was changed to Wellsburg.
