Notes - Belma was at sea, with a carrier task force, delivering planes to Wake and
Midway Islands, at the time Japan bombed Pearl Harbor.
He was on the cruiser Astoria, on which he was later serving, when it was sunk
at the Battle of Savo Island. He had earlier served on the battleship
California and the Carrier Lexington. After the Astoria sinking, he was
assigned to an AKA (attack transport), carring U.S. Marines to and from a
number of island invasions.
After W.W.II, he served on recruiting duty, until his retirement from the
Navy. He was later a Security Guard at the U.S. Federal Reserve Bank in
Portland, Or. and a Park Ranger with the State of Or., before his final
retirement. He had been exposed to Asbestos, while serving in the Navy and
eventually died of Asbestos Cancer.
