He was also a Rev. War. Soldier.
Pittsylvania Co., VA. was created from Halifax Co., VA. and later Henry Co.,
VA. was formed from Pitsylvania Co., VA.
The Statutess of the Legislature fo VA. (Hening's Statues) contain a list of
payments to residents of Halifax Co., VA. in Sept., 1758, mostly for service
in the militia, for hire of horses and for provisions.
On the list are Nehemiah and Ningum (Ninyon, Ninian) Prater.
In the County Cort Orders of Pittsylvania Co., VA. the following names are
found:
1767 Neheiah Prater
1768 William Prater
1773 Nehemiah Prater (sometimes written "Miah")
1778 Ninian Prater
In 1766 land was surveyed for Elexious Musick.
Those names appeared later in the personal property lists of Henry Co., VA.
1778 Nehemiah, Archibald, Jonathan, and Ninion Prater.
1780 Nehemiah, Jonathan, William, Ninian, and Archibald.
During this period the names of Samuel Allen and Elexious Musick were on the
lists.
In Henry Co., VA. Marriage Records is the marriage of Sarah Prater to Simon
Allen 17 Sept., 1783.
Archibald moved to Washington Co., VA. soon after his discharge from service.
He settled in an area which is now Tazewell Co., VA.
This is proven by a land survay recored in Russel Co., VA.
Elexious Musick entered 153 1/2 acres of land in Washington Co., VA.
by warrant dated 1782. The land later lay in Russel Co., and finally
in Tazewell Co. as these counties were established.
"the line of Arch Prater"
The property was located near Cedar Bluff in present day Tazewell Co. VA.
A 1783 survay of land in Washington Co., VA. shows that Jonathan Prater
acquired 110 acres on the North Fork of the Clinch River.
Marriage Records of Wahsington Co., VA. include these:
"Thomas Prater to Millie Wheeler 27 May, 1778."
"William Prater to Elizabeth Fugate 26 Apr., 1785."
A 1785 Washington Co., VA. petition, asking that Russel Co., VA. be formed,
bore the signatures, Joseah Coleby, James Coleby, John Coleby and Zachariah
Fugate; Arch Prater, Jonathan Prater, Thomas Prater, and William Prater;
Elexious Musick, and Samuel Allen.
Samuel Allen also appears in the records of Russel Co., VA.
After Russel Co., VA. was established, the names of the Praters and related
families appeared there.
The 1787 personal property tax list for the upper district contained the names
of James Fugate, Josiah Fugate, Randolph Fugate; Arch Prater, Jonathan Prater,
and William Prater.
In 1792 Jonathan Praters name was on the Russel Co., VA. land tax list:
"Jonathan Prater, assignee of E. Musick, 100 acres."
The Russel Co., Court Order Book for this period confirms that Jonathan Prater
died in 1795.
Archibald Prater was on the personal property tax list of Russel Co., VA. as
late as 1799. According to census records he must have moved to KY. between
1802 and 1807. He appears on the 1810 Floyd Co., KY. census.
Sarah (Prater) Allen, widow of Samuel Allen was also listed in this 1810
census.
(William Allen, born ca. 1783 in Patrick Co., VA., so of Sarah Prater and
Samuel Allen, died in Brethett Co., KY. in 1845.
