Notes - James had homsteaded 160 acres located halfway between Priest River and Priest
Lake, Idaho. Thus the "Halfway House" was named.
The land was deeded to him in 1904.
In 1904, James went to Alaska to work on a surveying crew for 1 1/2 years.
His reason for going to Alaska, he had been exposed to and had Tuberculosis.
After his stay in Alaska his health returned, he then worked in logging and
farming from 1906 to 1937. In 1937 he and his wife moved to the coast and
lived near their son Benton until their deaths.
Obituary:
James Taylor Prater, 83, Rt. #1 Marysville, Wash. died in a Everett Hospital
Sat. April 4, 1953, following a brief illness.
He was born Nov. 8, 1869 at St. Joseph, Mo. and was a pioneer of Priest River,
Idaho but had lived here for the last 9 years. Mr. Prater was a member of the
Sandpoint Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife effie and son Benton H. Prater both of Rt. #1
Marsville, Wash., 5 Grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the cha;pel of the Schaefer
Funeral Home, Marysville. Burial will be at Sandpoint, Idaho.
