    • James served in the War of 1812. He received bounty land for his service, and
      later his widow received a pension. the pension and bounty land warrant files
      contain information rregarding his age, marriage, military service and death.

      James and his family resided in Tazewell Co., Va until 1845, when they sold
      their land on the Clinch River and moved to Morgan Co., Ky.

      A series of deeds recorded in Deed Book H on pages 116,325,326, and 411-416
      identifies the heirs and their places of residence in 1856.

      On the 1820 Tazewell Co., VA. census there is a household headed by
      Elizabeth Prater, James mother, and James is also listed living in
      Tazewell Co. on the same census with his family, then on the 1830
      census there is a lady age 70 living in his household, it is believed
      that this was his mother.

      James is thought to be the only surviving son of Jonathan and Elizabeth.

      He was in Military service in Sept. 1813 in the 4th Va. Militia, term of 6 mo.
