- He was Sheriff in Woodruff Co., Arkansas and later became
Commissioner of Mines for the State of Arkansas.

William N. Wilkes pursued his education in the publick schools of Mercer, TN.
and on leaving his native state came to Woodruff Co., after which he was
employed in stores in Ausgusta until 1907. He then matriculated in the State
University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and was graduated in 1911 with the
Bachelor of Arts degree. he next entered the law schoold of the State
University, in which he pursued his studies for a year, after which he
returned to Woodruff Co., and taught in the rural districts for a time. He
also served as county examiner of schools and in 1919 was elected to the
Office of county Superintendent, serving through that and the ensuing year.
In 1921 he was elected sheriff and collector of woodruff Co. and continues in
the dual position at the present time, making a record in this office as he
did in the other positions whch he filled, for marked fidelity to duty and
faithfulness to every trust reposed in him.
