- It is thought that the Yarbrough (Yarberry) family came from MS. to Ark. when
the government opened land in ARK. for Indian settlement.
In the area known a the Louisiana Territory:
The first territorial legislature convened at St. Louis 26 June, 1806 and
created the Dist. of Arkansas, which then consisted of all the present state
of Arkansas and most of Oklahoma.
Missouri Territory was created in 1812, and included what is now the state of
Arkansas.
Cherokee Indians were granted land in western Arkansas in 1817, and some white
settlers came with them. Few came into Arkansas from Tennessee unless they
were of Cherokee blood. Most of the settlers to first come to the now Benton
Co., Ark. area were from TN., GA., MS., N.C., VA., and KY. The Yarberry's were
among them.
