Notes - John was a Jeweller in Birmingham, England in 1820.
Later the family emigrated to Upper Canada. Their journey from England
took 6 weeks and 44 days. They arrived in New York, sailed up the Hudson
River to Albany, travelled by wagon to Syracuse, then to Oswego and
finally by schooner to York (now Toronto), Canada where they settled until
1825 when they moved to Brantford, Ontario. There John owned a general
store and in 1830 he opened a distillery.
The Wilkes family were one of the first to settle in Brantford.
In 1834 John Wilkes was instrumental in the founding of the Congregational
Church of Brantford.
John's wife Susan died in Brantford on 11 Jan., 1858. John was living with his
son, James, in Brantford in 1861, but later moved to Montreal, where he died
on 16 Apr., 1867 at the home of his daughter, Susan Walker.
John and Susan are buried in Greenwood Cem. in Brantford.
