The 1st. Ohio Infantry was first organized in Apr., 1861 and intended to
have a length of service of 3 months but after the 3 months had expired
it was organized for a term of 3 years.
The history of the first 3 months:
Organized for three months under Colonel Alex. M. McCook, it served near
Washington City (Washington D.C.) in Schenck's Brigade, Tyler's Div.,
McDowell's Army of Northeast VA. Actions at Vienna, VA., June 17 and
July 9. McDowell's advance on Manassas, VA., July 16-21. Occupation of
Fairfax Court House, VA. July 17. Battle of Bull Run, VA. July 21.
Covered retreat to Washington. Ordered to Ohio and mustered out 2 Aug., 1861,
Expiration of Term.
It was engaged in 24 battles and skirmishes, lost 527 mem in action, and
marched over 2,500 miles.
The history of the 3 years term:
Organized at Camp Corwin, Dayton, Ohio, 5 Aug., to 30 Oct., 1861.
Moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, 31 Oct.,; thence to Louisville, KY. 5 Nov.,
and to West Point, KY. 8 Nov., Moved to Elizabethtown and Camp Nevin, KY.
15-16 Nov. Camp at Bacon Creek and Green River, KY., till Feb., 1862 and
later to the Army of the Cumberland until Sept., 1864.

March to Nashville, TN. 14-25 Feb., 1862. Occupation of Nashville 25 Feb.,
to 16 Mar. March to Duck River 16-21 Mar., and to Savannah, TN. 31 Mar.
to 6 Apr.. Battle of Shiloh, TN. 6-7 Apr. Advance on the siege of Corinth,
Miss.29 Apr. to 30 May. Duty at Corinth till 10 June. Moved to Iuka, Miss.,
thence to Tuscumbia, Florence and Huntsville, AL. 10 June to 5 July.
