DR. William T. Atkinson was born in Gallipolis, Ohio, in 1848, and is a son of
John and Rosetta Amesburry Atkinson, natives of Virginia. John Atkinson
removed to Ohio in 1810 with his parents, John and Sarah Donnely Atkinson, and
settled near Gallipolis on a farm; his mother was a native of Ireland, and his
father, Williams T. Atkinson, a Pennsylvanian, received his literary education
at the Gallia Academy, then attended the St. Louis Medical College, and
subsequently graduated from the Kansas City Medical College in 1872.
He opened an office in ST. Louis, after graduation, but owing to failing
health went to Charleston, W.Va. and practiced two years, then moved to
Ashland and practiced in partnership with Dr. J.W. Martin one year. after
which he was professionally engaged four years in Magoffin Co., KY.; he next
located in Paintsville, Johnson Co., Ky. , where he has been successfully
practicing eight years.
On Nov. 8, 1876, he married Sarah A. Prater, a daughter of Thomas and Rebbecca
Auxier Prater.
They have four children: Guy W., Robert L. , John E. and Thomas P.
Dr. Atkinson is a member of the Methodist Episcapal Church and in politics is
a Republican.
In 1876 he was appointed United States Pension Examining Surgeon, which
position he still holds.
