  • Notes
    • !He moved to Devonshire time of Henry VII.died 4th year of Queen Elizabeth. This line of Youngs in Devonshire
are placed here because I don't know where else to put them.I found them in the work of Sir William de la Pole, who's family ended up owning a large part of Devonshire,so he wrote down the owners of the land that his family acquired. He dealt wit h Mallet,Carew, and Walrond, and with the family of Prideaux which I think is another
word that translates "of the Meadow".Property called "Stuttecombe"or Stedcombe was granted by Henry VIII to
Sir Peter Carew, who sold it unto Walter Yong, and John Yong of Axminster, his son, whose son John was father of Walter Yong of Colyton, esq.the now lord thereof. He sold it.It is something singular that Sir W.Pole, who lived in this parish, should hav e taken no notice of the property of the Yonge-family,which was very considerable. In his time they had an ancient and fair mansion in the town of Colyton, which is called Colyton-great-house to this day.
And the Yonges greatly encreased their possessions in this parish by purchases, from the year 1622 to 1650.The ancient possessions of the Yonge-family in the time of Sir W.Pole, beside the purchases above alluded to,were
Colyton- barton and lands belonging to the great mansion,Cotchaine, the Hams, and Stoford tenement, besides several
houses in Colyton-Town.All these were then, and have ever since, continued in the Yonge-family till the year 1790,when they were all exchanged by Sir Geo.Yonge with Sir John William de la Pole, for his lands in Talaton.
