    • !History of Stokes-He was founder of St John's Abbey in Colchester,Essex Co. England.He lived in Castle Rye near Bayeux,Normandy.In 911 Hrolf,younger son of the jarl of More in Norway was granted Normandy and history relates that William the Conqu eror took refuge from conspiritors in Castle Rye when 20 years of age.The master of the house had his 3 sons convey his Prince,Duke William to his own castle of Falaise,a short distance to the south east.The sons names were Ralph,Hubert and Adam.S on Eudo or Eudes was to young at the time.This last line comes from the Falaise Roll.Hubert attended the duke at the conquest of England with his sons and a short time later returned to Normandy to quell a disturbance and was not heard of again.H is sons were magnificently rewarded. The eldest,Ralph,generally called FitzHubert,was castellan of Nottingham and held lands in Leicester,Stafford,Nottingham and Lincoln,but head of his great barony was in Derby in which he possessed the whole est ates of the rich Saxon named Levenot,comprising 36 manors.His male line died out with his grandson,Hubert,in about the third year of the reign of Henry III,He left 2 daughters.2nd source,LDS Film#587941,
