  • Notes
    • !He was knighted in 11 Jan. 1585.His death,a short time after,in consequence of infection communicated by some prisoners
at the castle of Exter, hath been noticed among the memorable incidents in this county. He died at Ash,and was buried in the parish church. The contest between him and Sir Francis Drake, occasioned by Francis's assumption of
Sir Benard's coat of arms, not being able to make out his descent from Bernards family,is a curious instance of the
jealous attachment to family distinction in those days. The Queen gave Sir Francis a new coat of Arms.He left issue,John and others.
