  !He entered the service of the United States in Oct.1778 as a private to fight Indians. He resided on the waters of the Holston River in the state of VA at the time,and marched from his home to the reconnaissance station on the North Fork of the Holston River and remained there about 2 months,he was then discharged and returned home.
