Notes - Joseph married when home on furlough from the Civil War. (He was 29 and she
was 16).
Sometime after they married they traveled by covered wagon to Mo. in 1865
and then they moved to Waco, Texas in about 1867 then in 1872 they moved to
California where her father had been given a great acreage for his services
in the War of 1812.
This was in the area of Santa Anna, CA. and later traded this land
for 6 sections of land near Fresno, CA. where he developed the largest wheat
farm in Calif. at the time.
This farm first consisted of about 440 acres in the Audberry Valley and
they call it "The Lodge."
The town of Prather, Ca. was founded by his descendants and is located near
his old home place. Today descendants have a ranch of about 1500 acres in the
area.
The name "Prather" was given to the settlement when Joseph E. Prather sent a
request to the PostMaster General requesting the local train stop at the
settlement to exchange mail pickups.
When the approval was given, the Postmaster General named the settlement
"Prather" for the man that sent the request.
