In his Will he named the children from his only marriage.

It is generally thought that he came west to visit his sister who had
married an officer who was later stationed at Fort Harrard and his cousin
Capt. Basil Prather (who settled at Louisville,Ky.) was involved in land
speculation in this area and John also came to establish claims for land.

John was recorded as a Court Justice in Madison Co., Ky. 1810 & 1811.
He was also involved in laying out the city boundry for other townships
near Richmond, Ky.

It is possible that his wife was a Quaker and John may have followed some of
the Quaker beliefs but it is not known if he became a Quaker himself.

His Will is found in Will Book # B, pp 13-14 and was Proved 3 Jan., 1814 by
William Berry and Samuel Turner. (Madison Co., Ky.)

He is referred to: John Prather, Esquire in the Circuit Court Minutes
Book, 24 Apr.1811, Present "Honorable John Prather,Esq."
He was also named as one of the members of the first Grand Jury held in the
county, and he was named one of the Commissioners to lay out the plan for

John Hunt Prather I. is the uncle of John Hunt Prather II.

The Uncle of John Hunt Prather II. was appointed as one of he members of the
first Grand Jury in Pulaski Co., and on 25 Feb., 1801 he was appointed as
one of the commissioners to plan the town of Somerset, and the location
of public buildings. The 40 acres making up the town was divided into 80 lots.

John Hunt Prather II. is often confused with his father and his uncle that he
is named after.

the establishment of the town of Harrodsburg in 1787. Other family members

Nov. 24, 1801: Metting at Somerset Building. Robert Anderson, Benjamin Mobley,
EDWARD PRATHER, Frederick Williams et al are appointed to select land for a
road from the courthouse to Smith's Ferry.
Feb. 22, 1802: Road selection committee report received. Recommended road pass
through lands of Wm. Fox, Robt. Smith, Wm. Anderson, EDWARD PRATHER, et al;
court approved. Road to start at mouth of Pitman Ck thence up the river.
Dec. 27, 1802: Approved Edward Prather's claim for 100 acres on Pitman Ck,
(actually around Sinking Ck nr present-day Somerset Oil) in keeping with an
Act of the General Assembly for selling and improving vacant land. (approval
of county commissioners necessary for grants issued under the South of Green
River Series.)
Apr. 25, 1803 Edward Prather relinqueshed all rights to those 100 acres and
claimed 70 acres on Pitman Ck. Ledger entries by Robert Modrel, John Hill
and John Modrel, Pulaski Co. blacksmiths, liste Edward Prather paying 6 pence
for having a plowsharre sharpened and 1 shilling forr having a pair of irons
sharpened in May of 1800.
Edward Prather served as a member of the Pulaski Co., Court from Jan., 27,
1806 to Nov. 29, 1808.

Edward Prather was a government tobacco inspector, circ 1814. He checked
tobacco shipped from Pulaski Co., to New Orleans, La. according to research by
Dean Prather.
Edward and Mary Prather sold their Pulaski Co. land in 1822 according to
research by Melvin Thompson.

He was commissioded as a Court Justice Madison Co., KY. in 1803
and Sheriff 1 Nov., 1811 with Gideon Prather his deputy.

Thomas went with his sister Sarah and her husband to Ft. Harrod, There he met

While in ILL. he worked by the month on a farm for 2 yrs. then returned with
his savings and purchased 75 head of cattle to take back to ILL.
He lost half of them on the trip but was able to sell the other half in at
Alton, ILL. He then returned to Ky. and later married before returning again
to ILL. He settled first near American Bottom and then Carrollton in 1824.

In 1849 my brother James went west to the gold fields of Calif. and I followed
him later, leaving the school room and joined an ox train to Calif.
I made $6 a day and saved $250 which was more money than I ever had.
I returned home by way of water by way of Panama.
In 1852 the west called again, when Judge Gilmore Hays and Andrrew Cowen, as
partners, organized a wagon expedition to come to the almost unknown country
called Oregon. This train consisted of 14 wagons with a total of 99 people.
I rode my own horse. It was my duty to take care of the 5 girls who rode their
horses and other odd duties on the train. One special job I had was to make
sure that Capt. Hayes saddlebags were strapped securely every morning to a
mule. Capt. Hayes had 12,000 in $20 Gold peices in these saddlebags to buy
cattle, horses and homestead upon his arrival.
Just before the train reached the Dalles, which was our destination, I became
infatuated with the appearance of the Grande Rounde Valley and persuaded the
Capt. to sell me a wagon-load of flour, bacon, sugar and coffee. I set a small
'A' tent up beside the road and soon disposed of the entire stock at quite
advanced prices to the emigrants who came along the train and were running
short of provisions. I again joined Capt. Hays at The Dalles and helped him
drive a drove of cattle, which he had purchased douwn the columbia river, to
the site of the small village of Portland.
In 1853 I came to Olympia, which was only a few years old. I walked carring
my blankets and worldly possessions all the way from Cowlitz landing.
My first work was logging for Capt. Percival and spent the winter with a small
crew of men slashing 35 acres of forest land for Nathan Eaton, nine miles from
town, out on Chambers' Prairie. As soon as Spring arrived I took a job as
axman and helped make the first survey of an airline from Portland to Puget
Sound. I stayed with this surveying party 2 years, when the indian war broke
out - in 1855. Then I volunteered under Judge Gilmore Hays, who was raising
the first Vol. Co. in the territory. Our Co. comprised of 80 volunteers. We
were mustered in at Ft. Steilacoom, Judge Hays being commissioned Capt.
But we had no more crossed over to the east side of the mountains than along
caomes Bill Tidd, the pony express rider, with a message from acting Gov.
Mason to the effect that Col. steptoe in command of the US troops, was
surrounded at Walla Walla by 1,000 indians and that Puget Sound Indaians were
also on the warpath. We were to hasten back to protect the settlers in the
White River Country. Returning to this side of the mountains, through the
Natchez Pass, we camped for the night as Connell's Prairie, just about where
the interurban line traverses the White River Valley. In the morning Capt.
Hays detailed me and four other men to guard the supplies and with the rest of
the co., which had now been increased in numbers by the addition of Lt.
Slaughter and 20 soldiers from US troops, started to ford the White River to
battle with the indians. As the men plunged into the river, the indians,
concealed along the banks on the far side, opened fire and about a dozen of
our men were killed, after which the indians retreated through the jungle.
As they carried their dead and wounded with them, we had no means to knowing
how many of the enemy our men picked off, but from blood prints along the
train they certainly met with a considerable loss.
Capt. hays and his men came back to the camp for the night, and in the
morning, each man takeing one day's rations with him, we started after the
indians along a trail so wild and narrow that we had to go single file most
all the way. We could hear the indians not far ahead of us - their ponies
crashing thrrough the brush and dogs yelping. In this way we came to a branch
of Stuck river. The indians were not in sight, but it was expected they were
ambushed on the other side of the river. Capt. Hays called for volunteers to
wade across the river and draw the indians fire, if indeed they were hiding
in the brush. After a monent's hard thinking I said: "Yes, Capt. Hays, I'll
go. Then Lt. slaughter, William Billings, Joe Givson and Joe Brannon joined
me. When I stepped into the water I went in over my waist into a chuck hole
made by the indian horses. My blunderbuss go wet, but I held it over my head
the rest of the way across the river. Every step I sxpected the next instant
would be my last, but we reached the far shore in saftey and were joined by
the rest of the Co. The boys begain firing wildly into the brush, but as I
didn't see anything to shoot at I saved my bullets and waited before firing.
So it came about that I was never really in an indian fight, for after
crossing the river the trail grew so bad that Capt. Hays decided we had
better return to Montgomery's, a Hudson Bay man's place, and wait further
orders. Soon after this the entire Co. was ordered to Mound Prairie, near
Tilley's ranch, for winter quarters. the time for which I had enlisted had
expired and the war was in the hands of the regular troops, I was honoraby
discharged and did not re-enlist.
My next adventure upon rturning to Olympia was to join Capt. J.g.Parker for a
trip to Victoria B.C. He had the first steamboat on Puget Sound. She was named
The Traveler, and was put under charter to bring military supplies from
Victoria, for which the government was to pay $50 a day.
In 1858 I went back to surveying, we located the military road form Ft.
Steilacoom to Ft. Bellingham. I am the man who drove the first stake in a
preliminarry survey of the Northern Pacific railroad, under supervision of
Jarred S. Hurd. this was near Snaqualmie Falls, in King Co. About this time I
acquired the lot of land on Washington Street, which for so many years was
known as the Prather home. For 12 years I was County commissioner, which is
the only public office I have ever held.
I think I may state: whithout undue boasting, that it was largely through my
efforts that thurston Co. received the $150,000 from the sale of public lands
to build the county court house, the same building which is now the state
capitol building, having been purchased by the state about 15 yearrs ago.
In the early 70's I became a guard at the asylum for insane at Steilacoom and
took my third trip east in 1876, to attend the Philadelphia exposition. Soon
after my return to the state of Washington I was married at Steilacoom to Miss
Agnes Winsor, who was also an attendant at the asylum, although for the 12
previous years had been teaching school. To us were born 3 children, Edith and
her twin brother, who died in infancy, and my son Samuel. Edith is now Mrs.
Walter C. Thompson and lives in the Puyallup valley and my son is in Alaska.

Notes:

William lived in Pulaski Co., KY. for 15 yrs. then move with his family to
Saliue Co., Mo. in Sept. of 1851.
In May of 1861 he enlisted in the Confed. Army as 1st. Lieut. State Guards of
Mo. under the command of Capt. Gordon, in Col. Graves Reg.
He fought in the battles of Carthage, Lexington, and Oak Hills.
He then went into the Regular Army (Confed.) in Capt. Taylors Co., 6th Reg.
Mo. Infantry as 2nd. Lieut.
He then fought in other battles such as Corinth and Vicksburg.
He was wounded in the left leg, and taken prisoner. The Union Army surgeons
amputated his leg at a hospital at Vicksburg.
It is said in the family that he moved to Dallas Texas because he was no
longer welcome in Mo.

A history of Dallas Texas, "Dallas Yesterday", has the following written about
him and his son Hugh E. Prather:

The development of Highland Park (Dallas, TX.) began in 1907 and was completed
with the opening of Highland Park West in 1924.
The Prather family had the most continueing role, beginning with Capt. William
Harrison Prather (nick named "Shorty" due to the loss of the lower part of one
leg) and continued by his son Hugh E. Prather.
William H. Prather was an early-day Dallas real estate man from Columbia, Mo.
who arrived toward the close of the Civil War as a wounded Confed. veteran.
He shortly married Anne Elizabeth Edmondson, daughter of William Terry
Edmondson who had brought his family by covered wagon from Tennessee and in
1851 installed a grist mill in what was then the town of Cedar Springs
(present Oak Lawn addition of Dallas, Tx.). The grist mill stone was made in
and imported from France.
When Capt. William H. Prather arrived in the small town of Dallas, he had been
seriously wounded in battle in Miss. The Union Army surgeons amputated a
mangled leg in a hospital in Vicksburg. When released as a disabled veteran,
Capt. Prather made his way to Texas in a buggy drawn by two horses. He drove
up before a well-known boarding house of the day on North Akard (Dallas,Tx.)
where the proprietress, a large, rawboned woman, appeared on the second-story
front balcony. From the buggy seat he asked for board and lodging.
"Young man", said the proprietress rather pointedly, "here in the South a
gentlaman always stands when speaking to a lady". The figure in the
Confederate uniform made no answer except to draw back the lap robe disclosing
his wounded condition, whereupon the boarding house lady came out to the buggy
and carried the young soldier in her arms into the house where he was accorded
full hospitality.

Between the opening of the first 100-acre section of Highland Park and the
opening of Highland Park West in 1924, Highland Park was incorporated (in
1913), grew much to its present population of more than 20.000 and with
University Park formed one of the best public school systems in the nation.

The Dallas Bride, a historic bridge which spanned the Brazos at Waco, had
several personalities identified with its building.
The best remembered, of course, was the principal backer of the project, the
remarkable woman capitalist Sarah Horton Cockrell, the widow of Alexander
Cockrell, who ranks with John Neely Bryan as one of the real founders of
Dallas.
Mrs. Cockrell was granted a charter by the Texas Legislature on Feb. 9, 1860,
to form the Dallas Bridge Company, but it was not until 5 years after the
Civil War that the Corporation was able to set the project in motion. Mrs.
Cockrell did not even serve on the board of directors.
Her officers were Dr. J. W. Crowdus, President, and George M. Swink secretary,
with John Neely bryan, A.C. Camp and William H. Prather as other directors.

William Freeman Prather, a rancher of Douglass Township, was born in Randolph
Co., Mo. March 25, 1825, a son of Thomas J. and rebecca (Helman) Prather, both
natives of Kentucky, but married in Missour, where the families of both had
moved. James and Hannah (Turner) Prather was among the first settlers of that
state., arriving as early as 1819 and both lived to be about 100 years.

William Freeman Prather was brought up on his father's farm and also learned
his father's trade, receiving in youth a fair education, taaking into
consideration the time and place. In time he became the owner of a farm of 220
acres. he was married Feb. 8, 1849, in Huntville, Mo, to Miss Marilda Sanford,
born in Howard Co., MO. 15 Feb., 1827, daughter of Dozier and Hannah Barnes
Sanford, both natives of Kentucky. Both families are understood to have been
American for several generations. Mrs. Sanford died at the home of her
daughter, Mrs. PDrather, 4 July, 1883, aged 89. J.D. Sanforrd died april 20,
1835 in MO.
Mr. Prather came to California in 1853, leaving Mo. april 22 of that year. He
now owns 320 acres of bottom land, yielding seventy-five bushels of barley to
the acre....

He claimed to have riden with Contrell after the Civil War. (Contrell Raiders)

He also claimed that he was in the group that robbed a train in California,
MO. at which time he stoled a set of wine glasses from the daughter of the
governer, which he sent to his wife Virginia.
He also claimed that he rode with Contrell using the alis name of Jim
Cummings.
Research done by Rita Tyree, a relative of Cyrus, proved that there was a Jim
Cummings that rode with Contrell, but this Jim Cummings lived his later years
in a retirement home and wrote a book about his life........ it was found that
this Jim Cummings and Cyrus were NOT one in the same.

His wife, Virginia, told her children and grandchildren that the outlaw
brothers, "the James Boys", came to there house for supper a couple of times
and were friends of the family.
It is thought that Cyrus even rode with the James Brothers a couple of
times.

Enclosing the application for Civil War pension without an affidavit from
witness who served with him as he dos'nt know of a single living has not
applied fefore now because he has been able to get by without it but for past
three or four years he has not been able to work his farm and it has not made
enought to pay taxes on it.

Name of S.E. Prather not found on rolls of Co., K, 3rd Mo. Cav CSA, which roll
cover (partially), period of 11 Nov., 1862 to 29 Feb., 1864.
The prisoner of War records show a man named S.E. Prather, private, Co., K
6th MO. Cav. CSA, surrendered at New Orleans, LA. 26 May, 1865 and paroled at
Shervport, LA. 14 June, 1865. Name not found on rolls of said Co., K, 6th
MO. Cav. / No other record found. The 6th MO. Cav. was at one time known as
the 3rd. MO. Cav.

"I, Talton Holman, a resident of Callao, Macon Co., MO. on my oath state that
I have known Silas Edward Prather, for about seventy years and know of my own

and Col. Hopper this of Shelby Brigade, and Marmadukes Division."

opinion was her ailments were chronic myocarditis.

Maggie's nephew filled out all of the paperwork after her death, thus
it is believed that she and Silas had no children.
Maggie's nephew was Edd Chapman of Greenwood, TX.
He signed her papers Nov., 1930.
