Judge William Prather was borrn in Frederick Co., Md.

He served in the War of 1812.

He moved from Iredell Co., N.C. with others in his family and allied families
Clarks Grant, Clark Co., IN. He was a school teacher in N.C.

He was listed as a Major in the Clark Co., IN. Milita in 1808.

William owned a Mill on Six Mile Crk, 3 mi. below Schwarrts. The style of the
mill was undershot; it was used for grinding corn. After several ownerships
the mill was operated by John Prather. He made various changes in the old
structure. He also added a sawmill; for a number of years he did a large
business.
In 1816 William and his family moved to Jennings Co., IN. There he served as
County Judge for 7 years.
William was a member of the Methodist-Episcopal Church. The first Methodist
sermon preached in Jennings Co., IN., was at Prather's log cabin in 1816 by
J. Chitwood, a local preacher. Shortly thereafter Russell Bigelow of Ohio
organized a churrch at his house and named Brother Prather as leader.
In 1830 William Prather lost his vision.

The information on Williams marriages came from Dewey Prather, a grandson,
and is related in his family genealogy which was collected by Sandy Prather
Merritt of Barington, IL. (1980)

Dewey Prather: Early 1900's (NOTE: Only part of the following is proven!!)
When William left N.C. in 1799, after his first 2 children were born, he
traveled to Indiana with Basil, his father and his wife's family, the
McCarroll's. Somewhere along the Ky and IN. borders, he took a horse and
"slipped away". He went to Breckinridge Co., now Lower Meade Co. and soon
"married", possibly childhood sweetheart, Lucinda Ashcraft. they had a son,
Robert "Bob", born 1800 in Ky. Lucinda died shortly after and is buried in
Ashcraft Cem. in Brandenburg.
William went back to McCarroll family, with son Bob, (from Lucinda Ashcraft)
at Prather, IN. (near Watson) in Clark Co. Stay with his wife McCarrol and
had, John, Peggy, Cynthia, Rachael, Hiram, Susan, mary, bertha, Lettuce, and
William.
Around 1832 he starts haveing family problems and leaves. William and son,
Bob, and Bobs wife Elizabeth Pleasant goes to Magnet, IN. which is in Perry
Co. There William "Marries" Rebecca VanMeter. He was scalped at English near
Magnet, Ind. but survived. Then William and Rebecca "Becky" and son Bob and
Bobs family canoed up river and up Wolf Creek to Caseyville, now Paynesville,
Ky. Went about 4 miles below and bought land. Was a farmer and Methodist
preacher. Had son, William Jennings "Bill Jenkins" Prather, born 1833, and
Nanny Sue born 1835. William was last seen on a boat at Brandenburrg, Ky.
with a load of mules for New Orleans. Word had gotten back to Magnet, Ind. to
his wife, Rebecca VanMeter, and son Bob, that he had jumped boat and was
met by two sons from North Vernon, which were sons by his wife Lettice
McCarrol. Mid-January of 1858, word came that he was seriously ill from
exposure. Later word came that he had died and the families to meet corpse on
boat at Brandenburg, Ky. to go to Jeffersonville, IN. and Prather, IN. for
burial. When they arrived at Jeffersonville, they learned that the grave
hadn't been dug at Prather, IN. so they had a short service at Livery Stable
and told families they could go home that they would take body back to
N.Vernon, IN. for burial. I'm sure there must have been some family
differences about where he should be buried.

Witnesses, Van Swearingen and Samuel Blake.
27 June, 1797 Minister's Return. "William Prather and Lettis McCarrell,
in the Calf Pasture at the house of Robert Jamison, in the presence of Samule
Blake, Van Swearingen and others." Marriage performed by John Young

In 1863, Lettice McCarroll Prather died and was buried next to William. this
is prrobably what has confused some researchers: since husband and wife are
buried next to earch other, it probably was assumed no other "wives" existed
and, in fact, there legally might have been no other "wives". there is no
mention of divorce from Lettice McCaarroll and I don't know if dates of
marriages to Lucinda Ashcraft and Rebecca Van Meter exist in the courthouses
or if, in fact, they were simpley not legally married.

An interesting fact is that William became known a "Skipjack" around IN.
"Skipjack" is a word which is used for fish that leap in and out of the water
or play on the surface of water.
We can only assume that this refers to his "jumping" ship (or river bardge)
as related in the above story.

History:

The United States Gov. was trying to get hold of Indian lands, and in 1809,
William H. Harison, Governor of Indiana territory, secured from the Indians
of southern and southwestern Indiana the title to a large area of land in the
valleys of the Wabash and the White Rivers. The area ceeded included over 3
million acres of the best land in the whole region. Two Indian leaders,
Tecumseh and "The Prophet" (brothers) called upon Gen. Harrison and told him
the Indian people should not ceed their land to get out of debt to the
government, but should let the Warriors decide and make treaties. They had no
desire for battle, but would defend with their lives any attemp at occupation
of the valley of the Wabash. The year 1810 passed without any outbreak, but
the Government and Harrison made preparations for the inevitable battle.
When Tecumseh went south the next year to organize the Indians in the extreme
southern part of Indiana and Illinois, Harrison occupied the Wabash Valley and
paid a visit to Tippecanoe. While he encamped near the village, the Indians
attacked on the night on 7 Nov., 1811, and killed and wounded many of his
troops, nearly causing a great crisis. Eventually Harrison returned with
his wounded to the settled part of the Territory, and no Indian war resulted.
There was brewing a buildup, however of hostility between the British who were
allies of the Indians, against the American settlers. This, coupled with other
conditions, resulted finally in the war of 1812.
Lloyd Benton Prather, and his brother-in-law Reason Redman took part in this
action, and Lloyd was seriously wounded in the battle. The roll of the Army
commanded by William H. Harrison, from 6 Sept. to 24 Nov., 1811 inculdes the
following:

In the 1860 census in Jefferson Co., Ia. Loyde Prater (Prather) was living in

In a letter dated 20 Jan., 1865:

From: Hiram Prather

"My father with three of his brothers was in the war of 1812. Uncle Loyd
Prather was wounded at Tippecanoe (With General Harrison in victory over the
Indians, Nov. 7, 1811). He is still living in his 83rd. year, at or near La
Grange, Iowa."
"You may think I am a little credulous when I say that there is something in
the blood which makes men patriotic, yet I am satisfied it is so."
"I met with the name Prather in the army from nearly all the western and
southwestern states, all testifing to the truth of the loyalty of the family."
"It is true that some of them are affected to some extent with Southern
feeling, (but very fine) Thank God."
And in tracing up their blood I find there has by some un-fortunate
circumstances in their marriage, go some of the Tory blood of the Revolution
mixed in a little."

Notes:

In his old age Robert Prather had arthritis so badly he could hardly walk.
He was nearly always confined to the house.

Robert Prather is listed on the 1860 Meade Co., Ky. census with son Reuben as
head-of-house. Also named are son Jonathan, Grandson, Thomas R. and infant
E.A. Roberts real property was valued at $400 as was his personal property.

Robert had some problems concerning his land and the law in Perry Co., IN.
so he moved accross the Ohio River into Meade Co., Ky.

His family had an extensive stolen horse business operating from KY. to TN. to
MO. There were seven brothers involved but only two went to prison.
The area that they operated from has become known as "Penitenry Rock" which
was a farm located just over the Ohio River in Perry Co., Indiana.

Robert was in Perry Co., IN. in 1830 and then in Meade Co., KY. 1850 census.
It is believed that he moved across the river into Meade Co., Ky circa 1835.
He may have moved back and forth accross the river to evade the law in IN.

His horse theft ring was finely broken and he was sent to prison for
horse theft. It is believed that he died in prison.
The story goes that he had operated his horse theft ring for many years and
in his later years, when he had become unable to walk, he would have the
newly stolen horses brought to his bedroom window so that he could see them.
He then would tell the others where to sell them and how much to ask for them.
Later when he was caught, they carried him into court on a cot, where he lay
during the trial.

There was a story written about this case in the local news paper.

At the time he lived in Perry Co. IN. it was largely
unsettled and was going though many changes when the counties were being
restructured and reformed into smaller counties. There may have been earlier
indian claims for his land that was formed as part of Perry Co. out of indiam
lands.

Hiram Prather was a farmer and in politics he was first a "Whig" and
later a "Republican".

Hiram was a Methodist. Church meeting were held at his residence
until the summer of 1854.

Hiram fought in the Mexican / American War. He also served in the
Union Army in the Civil War as did seven of his sons .. Allen,
Uriah, Alonzo, William, Leander, Walter and John Quincy Prather.
He was commissioned on 26 Apr., 1861 and mustered in 20 Sept., 1861
and served until 19 May, 1862 in the 6th Reg., 38th Indiana Vol. Infantry.
He was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh.

In his later years he lived in North Vernon, IN.
Earlier, in about 1850, he built one of the first houses
in North Vernon, IN.

He incorrectly stated that his grandfather was from England....... he was
from NEW ENGLAND, and was a descendant of an imagrant from England.

John was called John Jr. to help distinguesh him from his uncle John Prather.
He owned what was called "Judge William Prather's undershot Mill on Six Mile
Creek.
Family tradition states the mill changed hands several times then finally came
into the possession of John Prather.
He made various changes in the old structure, so many as to leave it "almost
unrecongnizable by them who had seen it last." He attached a saw mill; for a
number of years he did a very large business, but at last the old mill was
abandoned.

Jonathan C. Prather, the son of J.C. Prather and Elizabeth Roland was born
27 March, 1853, on a farm in the eastern part of Lucas Co., IA.
His father died in Oct., 1852, before his b9irth in the following spring, and
consequently, Jonathan has no knowledge of his paternal history.
His mother was a native of Indiana, and after her husband's death, married a
Mr. Chambers. To her first marriage were born two children, Mrs. Nacny Shore
of Lucas Co., IA. and J.C. Prather of Missouri Valley, IA.
To her second marriage were born five children, Frank and Albert, farmers
of Harrison Co., IA.; Arthur, a banker of Linwood, IA.; Mrs. M. Haight and
Mrs. E. Gash of Harrison Co., IA.

J. C. Prather was educated in the common schools and had one year of training
in the Missouri Valley High School. He workded on farms in the summer seasons
and went to school during the winter. In 1870 he came to Missouri Valley and
spent most of the remainder of his life in this city. He started to teach
school before reaching his majority, and for four years taught in Harrison and
Pottawattamie Counties. While still a young man, he engaged in the groucery
business in Missouri Valley, and for ten years conducted a successful grocery
in the city. He then disposed of this business and engaged in tubular well
drilling for 15 years.

J.C. Prather has always been active in local Democratic politics and was
elected to the city cuncil in 1886, serving for 8 consecutive years. He was
appointed mayor in the early nineties to fill out an unexpired term, and was
elected mayor in 1913. He servied another term on the city council, beginning
in 1911. In that year he was the nominee of this party for county supervisor
and many of his friends thought he was elected. It was a close race, but he
finally was declared defeated. As Mayor, in cooperation with the council, he
has been instrumental in hav9ing $14,000 expended for curbing and gutters in
the city and a similar amount was expended in the summer of 1914. The city is
also engaged in paving operations at an expense of nearly $58,000, an
improvement which will greatly enhance the beauty of the city. Mayor Prather
also has taken an active part in behalf of the drainage system of the town,
and improvement which is much needed. In fact, Mr. Prather is deeply
interested in every movement which he feels will benefit the city of which he
has the honor to be the chief executive. He is a popular man throughout the
county and is well known and universally liked be everyone with whom he comes
in contact.

WAR WITH MEXICO
James was enrolled as Private of Co., B, 4th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers;
mustered into the Military Service of the USA at Jeffersonville, Clark Co.,
Ind., on 8 June, 1847. Mustering Officer: Capt. Gatlin. Mustered out at
Madison, Ind., 16 July, 1848.

CIVIL WAR
James was enrolled as Private of Co. I, 120th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers
on 27 Dec., 1863. Mustered into Military Service of the USA at Columbus,
Indiana, 20 Feb., 1864 for term of 3 years, by Mustering Officer: Capt.
Thatcher. Age 44. Mustered out at Grafton, W.Va. 29 June, 1865.

He was a farmer and a carpenter.
He had black hair, dark eyes, dark complextion.
He lost the sight in one eye during the war.

According to things his wife told her grandchildren:
James was a very fine and admirable person most of the time, but he had a
weakness for liquor, and it brought out an exaggerated bellingerence in him.
However she said she was a "fighter too", and she was not going to take any of
his abuse nor let the children be subjected to it, when he was under the
influence of liquor and when talking things over did no good, she told him she
had his old army rifle loaded up and the next time he was on a rampage she was
going to "let him have it". He got to staying away from home when he was "in
his cups" and finelly drifted away entirely. Martha said she saw him one time
when she was a girl, on the streets of Bloomington, Ind. and they heard from
neighbors that he died in the spring of 1872.
His wife later years were spent in the home of her daughter, Martha (Dillman)
and later moved with them to Nickerson, Reno Co., Kan.

This venerable citizen of Raccoon Township, Marion Co., has been a very active
man in the development of this part of the Union, having spent his long life
in this and her sister state on the east (Indiana). He has seen the wonderful
growth of the country from its wild prairies, dense forsest, inhaited by red
men and wild beast to one of the richest and best courntries in the world.

Joseph A. Prather was born in Clark Co., INdiana, January 31, 1824, the son of
Sihon and Elizabeth Williams Prather, the former a native of North Carolina
and the latter of VA. The subject's father grew up in the Tar Heel state and
moved to Clark Co., Indiana, where he lived on a farm and where he and his
wife both died. He was a Democrat and held the office of Justice of the Peace
for several years. He was a member of the Methodist church, well known and
influential. They were the parents of the following children: Louisa,
deceased; Samantha, deceased; Thomas, deceased; John, deceased; Joseph A., our
subject; William, deceased; Margaret lives in Clark Co., Indiana. Several
children died young.

Joseph A. Prather, our subject, had few opportunities to become educated,
however he attended subscription schools for a time and lived at home until he
was 21 yrs. of age, when he went to Floyd Co., Indiana, and in 1844 married
Sarah Ann Patrick, a native of Clark Co., IN. where she was born December 3,
1827, the daughter of William and Nancy Harris Patrick, the former a native of
North Carolina and the latter of VA.
They lived and died in Clark Co., IN., on a farm. There were twelve children
in their family as follows: Jeremiah, Rebecca, John, Elizabeth, Mary, William,
Solomon, James, Nancy, Lewis, Sarah Ann and Eliza. they are all deceased
execept the wife of our subject. Mr. and Mrs. Prather became the parents of
nine children, three deceased, namely: Nancy who married Roland Warren, lives
in Centralia, IL. and is the mother of eight children:
Margaret, who is now deceased, having died January 24, 1908, married Lewis
Patton, haveing become the mother of ten children, one who is deceased; John,
who married Belle Oldfield, is a farmer and teamster at Centralia, and has for
children: Elia J., who married Thomas Shaw, of Centralia, is the mother of
Eight children; Emmons R. a farmer in Raccoon Twonship, first married Mollie
Gaston and later Lillie Blair, of Raccoon Township, having had four children
by his first wife and two by the second; Etha is the wife of Charles Bundy, of
Raccoon township, a full sketch of who appears in this work; Orville, who is
living on part of the old home place in Raccoon township, married, first Laura
May, and his secnd wife was Annie Howard, had three children by each wife:
William died at the age of 7 yrs.; George died when 2 yrs.
The subject has 53 grandchildren and 34 great-grandchildren. After his
marriage our subject lived in Floyd Co., In. having come to Marion Co., IL. in
1854, where he purchased two hundred and twenty acres of land in sections 29
and 32. He made all the improvements on the place, there having been but very
little when he took charge, but being a good manager and a hard worker he soon
developed a most excellant farm and established a comfortable home.
He carries on general farming, raising all kinds of grain, fruit and stock and
making a success of all that he undertakes. He is a Demorcrat in politics and
has held some of the offices in Raccoon township, always taking much interest
in the affairs of his townshipo. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal
church at Walnut Hill. He has always b3een a hard working man and is still
very well preserved for a man of his years, having a good business mind and
able to manage the many details of his fine farm with profit form year to
year. He is a very well read man, keeping well posted on all current topics.
As a result of his life of industry, honesty and kindness he has scotes of
worm friends and if a single enemy he does not know it. Teveryone in this
part of Marion Co. know "Uncle Joe" Prather, as he is familiarly called and
everybody respects him highly.
