"The June Court of 1735 appointed THOMAS PRATHER as tobacco burner, replacing
John Nelson who was excused because of illness in his family."

NOTE: A "tobacco burner" was a person who was in charge of the curing of
tobacco in the large tobacco houses. Tobacco was cured by fire drying it.

Will of Thomas Sprigg Prather:
In the name of God, Amen I Thomas Prater of Washington Co., & State of
Maryland being of weak in body, but of sound and perfect mind and memory,
(thanks be to God)
Concerning the uncertainty of this mortal life, and that it is appointed for
all men once to die, do make and publish this my last Will and Testament in
manner & form following, (that is to say)
First and principally I recommend my soul to the Almighty God that gave it,
and my body to the dust to be deasonly buried at the discretion of my
Executors hereafter named nothing doubting but that I shall receive the Soul
again at the general Resurrection of all flesh, by the mighty power of God,
and as touching my Wordly Estate, wherewith it has pleased God to bless me.
I give and bequeath in manner and form following-imprimis.

First and principally I will that all my just debts and funeral charges be
paid.
Item... I give and bequeath to my sons Richard, Charles, and James Prather
ten shillings common current money each, and no more.
Item... I give and bequeath to my daughters Mary, Elinor, Sarah, & Ann
five Shillings current money and no more.
Item... I give and bequeath to my son Basil one negro boy called Harry, him
and his heirs and assigns forever.
Item... I give and bequeath to my youngest son Thomas one negro boy named

Item... I give and bequeath all the remaining part of my Estate, my whife's
third Excepted, to my sone's Basil and Thomas and daughter Elizabeth to be
equally divided amongst them.

Served French and Indian War - he was sheriff and held many important posts -
one of which was the first Justice of the newly formed Frederick Co., in
1749 (Maryland).In the Rev.War he was Commander of the forces in that Co.
He lived at Conegocheague Manor Plantation. His wife was from the Weston
Manor Plantation where the Clagett's lived for generations and still live
there today. / He was also an Episcopal Clergyman in Williamsport, Md.

of Loyathanna in the French and Indian War. (During an Indian ambush)

Notes:

Basil's father was a Capt. in the Maryland Militia and a surveyor.
During the French and Indian War his father was one of the most conspicuous
commanders of the Maryland forces, becoming a Colonel in 1756, and Commander
in Chief of the Frederick Militia in 1763. After the formation of the new
Republic he served on the Committe of Observation. Basil, along with his
brothers, served in the colonial forces during this war.
Following the French and Indian War, Basil Prather was one of the very early
explorers into what was to become Kentucky. In 1775, in the company of his
nephew Thomas Prather and others, they explored the area near present
Springfield and Harrodsburg, Ky. where they staked out a claim of 3,000 acres.
Basil continued his explorations and land speculations until the outbreak of
the Revolution when he returned to Maryland in early 1776 and was commissioned
as Capt. in the Militia. [ "By the order of the Frederick County Committee of
Observation, Feb. 5, 1776 , BASIL PRATHER reccommended as Captain." ]
In the summer BASIL PRATHER and a friend and fellow explorer, Van Swearingen,
were commissioned in the Continental Army when the 8th Pennsylvania Regiment
was formed by Congress, 15 July, 1776. Van Swearengen was made Capt. and BASIL
PRATHER was made First Lieutenant. Their assignment was to protect the
frontier from British/Indian armies. On 23 Nov.,1776 the 8th PA. was ordered
"-to march, with all possible expedition, by the nearest route, to Brunswick
New Jersey, or to join Gen. Washington where ever he may be."
This was a grueling and ill-fated march in the deep of winter and the regiment
was greatly reduced, for at the end of it, the muster rolls reveals that out
of the original number of 684 men, "36 were prisoners of war; 14 missing;
51 dead; 126 deserted." There were also many wounded and all were suffering
the effects of combat and the terrible winter march. "Quibbletown, 28 Feb.,
1777 -"I desired the doctor by all means to visit them. They were raised about
the Ohio, and had traveled near 500 miles -- for 150 miles over the mountains,
never entering a house, but building fires and incamping in the snow."
"Considerable numbers have died. A Colonel and Lieutenant Colonel among the
dead----." The munster rolls list 10 Companies and Capt. Lt. BASIL PRATHER
was in command of one of them.
In the late summer of the 1777 Washington was preparing to defend against the
impending approach of Burgoyne's army when he formed the famed "Rangers" under
the command of his close friend Col. Daniel Morgan. This small unit was
originally conceived to be a force of picked riflemen to be used to combat the
Indian units under Burgoyne's command. Three companies were formed from all
the 8th Pennsylvania and detached from the reg. to Col. Morgan's command.
These three companies were commanded by BASIL PRATHER, Van Swearengin, and
John Hardin. It was this force that so decimated the British ranks in the
desperate fights at Freemans Farm, in the latter days of Sept. and early Oct.,
that the Continental Army had its first victory when Gen. Burgoyne surrendered
on Oct. 17th." These same companies were also with Morgan, and greatly
distingueshed themselves in the series of actions that resulted in the
surrender of Gen. Burgoyne at Saratoga."
BASIL PRATHER was also with these same companies when the 8th Penn.
was engaged in the battles of Brandywine and Germantown and spent the
winter of 1777/78 encamped with Gen. George Washington at Valley Forge.
On 5 Mar.,1778 the 8th was ordered to Pittsburgh and to once again engage in
the protection of the Western frontiers. During their march to Pittsburgh they
were engaged in actions against hostile indians and continued engagements with
hostiles around Pittsburgh.
BASIL PRATHER resigned form the 8th Pennsylvania and joined the forces of
Virginia which were engaged along the Ohio against the British and Indians.
He was placed under the command of Gen. George R. Clark.
BASIL PRATHER was made a Capt. of Virginia and in 1781 he was Adjutant Gen.
at Fort Nelson, the present site of Louisville, Ky.
Basil recieved many grants of land in Ky and Ind., some of which were as far
south as Hickman on the Mississippi. At the time his southern lands were in
Chickasaw country and his descendants could not take possession of these lands
until after 1830. The lands in Indiana were recorded: "To Basil Prather for
consideration of his Military Service from the Commissioners of the Illinois
Grant."
After the Revolution, Capt. Basil was engaged in the acquisition of land and
traveled between his fathers home in Maryland and his new home at the falls
of the Ohio (near Louisville). He also maintained a residence in Pennsylvania
on the Monongahela.
In 1789 Captain Prather met Frances Meriwether of Virginia at a ball given in
the fort at Jeffersonville, across the river from Louisville on the Ind. side.
She was much younger than he but they were married 26 Feb.,1789 in Louisville.
He then purchased the 300 acre tract on Beargrass Creek where he built a
large Mansion which was a louisville landmark for over 150 yrs.
Basil Prather was known for his hospitality and courteous demeanor.
On May of 1790 he was elected one of the Trustees of the Town of Louisville.
He died in 1803. He was a man of connanding character and ability.
Records state:"He was an exceedingly handsome man of 6 ft. 3 in. tall, finely
proportioned, almost the ideal soldier."
Basil served as a patriot throughout the war, declining any pay for his
services.
His estate was administered by Basil's half brother Capt. Thomas Prather.
Thomas became one of the most prominent business and social leaders of Ky.
He founded the old Bank of Ky. and was the first president of it.
It is said that he was Kentuckey's first millionaire and his home stood on old
"Prather Square" in down town Louisville.
Basils son was also named Thomas and he served as a soldier in the war of
1812 and fought under General Jackson in the Battle of New Orleans.
He lived out his life at Louisville in his fathers home.
The home had 3 floors with 18 rooms on the first two floors and the third
floor was a Ballroom. No room had less than 22 sq. feet. The ceilings were
14 feet high. It also had very spacious cellars. It burned in 1944.
Basils home was called "Fox Hill" and it required 14 servants when Basil lived
there. The old home has been rebuilt and is a historial landmark.
It is now part of Creation Park and known as the Ben Collings Mansion.

and my body to the Earth to be decently burried at the discretion of my
Excutors hereinafter named and after my debtrs are paid and my wife's thirds
are taken out of my property I devcise and bequeath as follows:
I give and bequeath my son charles Prather, all that tract of land I purchased
of Conrad Pusing lying and being in Hamphire Co. and Commonwealth of Virginia
forever. I give and bequeath to my son charles All that tract of land I
purchased of Nacy Jackson lying in Hampshire co. and Commonwealth of Virginia
aforsaid forever. I also give and bequeath to my son Charles four hundred
dollars. Now it is my will and desire that if my said son Charles doesnot
within two years next after my decease appear before my Executors and claim in
person the above mentioned two tracts of land and the four hundred dollars
then in that in that case he failing so to do the above mentioned wwo tracts
of land and the fourhundred dollars shall be disposed of by my Executors as my
personal property. I give and bequeath to my son James Prather the Residue of
the lands I own in the County of Hampshire and Commonwealth of Virginia and
all the lands I own in Allegany County and State of Maryland to be by him held
in fee simple. I also give and bequeath to my son James four hundred dollars
and my Negro man named Harry. I give and bequeath to my son Basil Prather and
to my daughters Elizabeth, Mary Martha, Caty, and Ruth the sum of four hundred
dollars each. I will and desire that the residue of my real and personal
property be sold and the money arising from the sale be eqally divided among

Founded Wellsburg, W.VA. then called Charlestown after him.(Recorded in 1789).
Charles laid out the Town that was first called Charlestown and later changed
to Wellsburg. He was one of the first to settle there and owned the land.
Shortly after it was settled a lady was killed and scalped near the river
which the settlement was located on. The Mingo Indians had an encampment on
the other side of the river and nearby. Nothing else recorded of this event.

John Jacob, deceased, was born in Baltimore, MD. in 1778, and died in
Louisville, in 1852. He came to this city about 1807, and engaged in the
mercantile business, forming a partnership with Thomas Prather, one of the
most prominent of Louisville's early business men.
The old house of Prather & Jacob was for many years one of the reliable
business houses of the young city, and was the synonym for all that was
upright and honorable.
After the dissolution of their partnership Mr. Jacob became president of the
Branch Bank of the United States, and after it was closed was made president
of the Bank of Kentucky, which position he resigned in 1836. He was for a
number of years a member of the city council, and in 1848 he became president
of the Louisville & Frankfort Railroad, which was fully completed during his
administration; but the infirmities of age compelled him to resign the
position and retire from active business. He aided in the establishment of the
asylum for the blind, and contributed greatly, in various ways, not only to
the growth and prosperity of Louisville, but also to the amelioration of the
condition of the poor and needy, displaying a liberal hand in the great
charities of the city, which rapidly increased in value, and, by well
conducted, ligitimate business, he accumulated a large fortune. Mr. Jacob was
twice married: 1st. to Miss Ann O. Fontaine.
Children: Matilda Prather Jacob (m.Curran Pope), Mrs. John W. Tyler, and John
I. Jacob Jr.
His 2nd. wife: Lucy Donald Robertson.
Children: Mrs. James B. Clay, of Fayette Co.; Col. Richard T. Jacob,
ex-lieutenant governor of Ky.; Thomas P. Jacob, president of the Kentucky &
Louisville, Mutual Insurance Co.; and Hon Charles D. Jacob, mayor of
Louisville.

Curran Pope:
He graduated at West Point in 1836, and after a short service in the army he
resigned to take one of the clerkships made vacant by his father. He held the
office for seventeen years, the last forur of which were by election by the
people. He was a citizen of much of public spririt; on of the original
projectors and directors of the Louisvelle & Nashville, Railroad; on of the
main promoters of Louisville Water Works; devoted much of his time as Trustee
of Danville, College, and as trustee of various educational institutions of
Louisville especially to a seminary organized and established by himself and
others in the old homestead of his father; served for eleven years in the
General Council of Louisville; and on the breaking out of the late war he
espoused the cause of the Union. He raised the 15th Kentucky Reg., which,
after a varied service, was decimated in the battle of Perryville, which, for
the number of the length of time engaged, is said to have been the bloodiest
battle of the war. Early in the action Colonel Pore's horse was killed under
him, and toward the close of the engagement he was shot through the shoulder.
E.P.Humphrey, D.D., LL.D., the scholarly author of "Sacred History from the
Creation to the Giving of the Law: who was the co-laborer in many fields of
usefulness with Colonel Pope, and who was his life-long friend, thus writes of
him a short time after Colonel Pope's death:...
"through his father, the late Warden Pope, Esq. - in his day one of the
formost citizens of the commonwealth - and through his excellent mother and
amiable wife as well, he was allied to some of the most influential families
in the country.... His ample private fortune released him, in a large measure,
from professional labor; so that he was able to devote the last 12 years of
his life to the general interests of society."

General Sherman learning of the death of Colonel Pope wrote Colonel Pope's
widow the following letter:
Headquarters, Memphis, Tenn.
November 10, 1862.
Dear Madam: -
.... I know you will pardon me, afar off, if, at this your dread hour, I come
to bear my feeble show of honor to him whose name you bear and whose child
will in after years look back upon as one of those heroes who labored and gave
his life to his country. Will do I recall the soft and gentle voice of Curran
Pospe, the peculiar delicacy of his approach, and almost unequal courtesy of
hi manner and the first faint doubt that one so gentle, so mild, so beautiful
in character, should be a warrior; but another look, and his eye, the plain
direst assertion of a high and holy purpose, with the pressure of his lips,
told that he was a man; one to lead; one to go where duty called him though
the path led through the hail storm of battle. Among all the men I have ever
met in the progress of this un-natural war, I cannot recall one in whose every
act and expression was so manifest the good and true man; one who so well
filled the type of the Kenturcky gentleman.
He died not upon the battle-field but of wounds inflicted by parricidal hands
on Kentuckys' soil and his blood is the cement that will ever more bind
togethere the disjointed parts of a mighty nation. Though for a time smitten
down by the terrible calamity, may you and you child soon learn to look upon
his name and fame as encircled by a halo of glory more beautiful than ever
decked the victor's brow. Curran Pope is dead, but millions will battle on,
till from his heaven-home he will see his own beloved Kentky the center of his
great country, regenerated and disenthralled from the toils of wicked men.
I fear that in trying to carry comfort to a afflicted heart, I do it rudely,
but I know you will permit me in my blunt way to bear my feeble testimony to
the goodness, braveness, and gallantry of the man who more nearly filled the
picture of the preux chevalier of his age, than any man I have yet met. I know
you are in the midst of a host of friends, but should in the progress of years
any opportunity come by which I can be of service to any of the family of
curran Pope, command me.

Curran Pope was married to Matilda Prather Jacob a daughter of John I. Jacob,
by whom he was belessed with one daughter, Mary Tyler Pope, who is possessed
of many accomplishments, great force of character and intellect, and of much
beauty, and who still lived in the home of her heroic father, the happy wife
of Judge Alfred Thruston Pope, and the devoted mother of an interesting
family.

Broadway Street in Louisville was named previously, Prather Street after
he and his cousin John Jeremiah Jacob Prather. They were both leading
financial and social families of Louisville. They gave the land and endowed
the Hospital there. They were both married to Fountain girls.
He was known a the richest man in Ky./ He started and was president of the
"First Bank of Kentucky", often referred to as the "Old Bank of Ky."

The Statutess of the Legislature fo VA. (Hening's Statues) contain a list of
payments to residents of Halifax Co., VA. in Sept., 1758, mostly for service
in the militia, for hire of horses and for provisions.
On the list are Nehemiah and Ningum (Ninyon, Ninian) Prater.
In the County Cort Orders of Pittsylvania Co., VA. the following names are
found:

In 1766 land was surveyed for Elexious Musick.
Those names appeared later in the personal property lists of Henry Co., VA.
1778 Nehemiah, Archibald, Jonathan, and Ninion Prater.
1780 Nehemiah, Jonathan, William, Ninian, and Archibald.

During this period the names of Samuel Allen and Elexious Musick were on the
lists.
In Henry Co., VA. Marriage Records is the marriage of Sarah Prater to Simon
Allen 17 Sept., 1783.

Archibald moved to Washington Co., VA. soon after his discharge from service.
He settled in an area which is now Tazewell Co., VA.
This is proven by a land survay recored in Russel Co., VA.
Elexious Musick entered 153 1/2 acres of land in Washington Co., VA.
by warrant dated 1782. The land later lay in Russel Co., and finally
in Tazewell Co. as these counties were established.
"the line of Arch Prater"
The property was located near Cedar Bluff in present day Tazewell Co. VA.

A 1783 survay of land in Washington Co., VA. shows that Jonathan Prater
acquired 110 acres on the North Fork of the Clinch River.

Marriage Records of Wahsington Co., VA. include these:
"Thomas Prater to Millie Wheeler 27 May, 1778."
"William Prater to Elizabeth Fugate 26 Apr., 1785."

A 1785 Washington Co., VA. petition, asking that Russel Co., VA. be formed,
bore the signatures, Joseah Coleby, James Coleby, John Coleby and Zachariah
Fugate; Arch Prater, Jonathan Prater, Thomas Prater, and William Prater;
Elexious Musick, and Samuel Allen.

Samuel Allen also appears in the records of Russel Co., VA.

After Russel Co., VA. was established, the names of the Praters and related
families appeared there.
The 1787 personal property tax list for the upper district contained the names
of James Fugate, Josiah Fugate, Randolph Fugate; Arch Prater, Jonathan Prater,
and William Prater.

In 1792 Jonathan Praters name was on the Russel Co., VA. land tax list:
"Jonathan Prater, assignee of E. Musick, 100 acres."
The Russel Co., Court Order Book for this period confirms that Jonathan Prater
died in 1795.

Archibald Prater was on the personal property tax list of Russel Co., VA. as
late as 1799. According to census records he must have moved to KY. between
1802 and 1807. He appears on the 1810 Floyd Co., KY. census.
Sarah (Prater) Allen, widow of Samuel Allen was also listed in this 1810
census.
(William Allen, born ca. 1783 in Patrick Co., VA., so of Sarah Prater and
Samuel Allen, died in Brethett Co., KY. in 1845.

Harrodsburg, Ky., that he Henry Prather of Mercer Co., Ky., aged 71 years, was
acquaninted with Thomas and Basil PDrather's cabins, and that he made thomas
Prather's entry of 2000 acres to include thoe cabins on Hardin's Creek, (acct.
Washington Co., Ky. Archives, at Springfield, Ky.)
When the Committee of Observation for Elizabeth Town (now Hagertown) District,
Washington Co., (formerly before 1776 Frederick Co.) Marland recommended
Basil Prather as Captain, they also recommended HENRY PRATHER as Lieutenant.
In 1778, HENRY PRATHER is listed as a "Pioneer Soldier" (Collins Hist. of KY.)
Next HENRY PRATHER served as a private and then as a Captain, of Lincoln
Militia in George Rogers Clark Expedition, 1778/9. (Virginia State Library has
a photostat copy of the land grant received by HENRY PRATHER, for his services
in this expedition, for land in Clark Co., Indiana.

At a court held Dec., 3, 1779 Harrodsburg for adjusting disputed titles to Ky.
land, Henry was granted 1,400 acres on "Shawnee Run". He Stated he had resided
in the county 12 months before 1778.

Charles has been a very elusive person to research.
We know that he was in Va. and family files tell that he went west to join
others members of the family " on the frontier".
These other members of the family were found to have gone to Jefferson Co.,
Ky. (Kentuck Parish, W.Va. at that time) and also into what was known as
Clarks Grant, which later became Clark Co., Ind.
We know that some of his children were in Vigo Co., Ind. and the names matched
some of those who we know to be brothers and sisters of William Allen Prather.

Charles went west but we have not found his place of death.

He left Va. to go west because several of his cousins found good settlements
after the Rev. War in Ky. and Ind. One such cousin was Basil Henry Prather
who was Adj. General at Ft. Nelson (near Louisville, Ky) at the end of the
War. Basil Prather was given a grant of 4000 acres in Ind. from the comm. of
the Illinois Grant for his role in the Rev. War. Many Prathers went west to
settle as a result of grants being given after the Rev. War.

When William Basil Prather left home, in Allegany Co., Md. he went to Ky to
visit his uncle, Capt. Basil Prather and his first cousin Capt. Henry Prather.
Capt. Henry Prather owned much land in what is now Washington, Mercer & Nelson
Counties in Ky, parrticularly along the Clear Crk. area in Jessamine Co. It
was during this visit to Capt. henry Prather in Jessamine Co., Ky. (1802) that
William Basil Prather met ruth Wilson. Her father, Thomas Wilson, woned land
adjoining the Prather Clear Crk. tracts. Thomas Wilson had accompanied Capt.
Henry Prther to Ky circa 1776. Capt. Basil Prather deeded his nephew, William
basil, 200 acres of land for "love & affection"
William basil Prrather served in the War of 1812 as a Private in the 7th Reg.
Volunteer Militia. He enlisted 28 Aug., 1812 at Springfield in Washington Co.,
Ky. He was discharged at the same place 25 Mar., 1813.
William Prather was at times an Election Clerk, Election Judge & Washington
Co. Constable.

Basil began using the name William B. so as to distinguish himself
from his Uncle Basil.
His Uncle Basil was a capt. in the Continental Army during the Rev. War.
Wm. owned large tracks of land in Washington and Mercer Co., Ky. much of which
was left to him by his Uncle Basil and cousin Capt. Henry Prather.

William Prater (Prather) was on the list: "Old Three Hundred Pioneers"....
a list of settlers recorded living in Austins First Colony.
He came to Texas in 1822.
Stephen F. Austin's "Old Three Hundred" required that wives and children
were to be settled in the colony by 1826.

William voted in the election of April, 1824, which sent the Baron de Bastrop
as Texas deputy to the convention of Coahuila and Texas.
On July, 19, 1824, Prater received title to a league and a labor of land now
part of Brazoria and Ft. Bend Counties. (now Brazoria & Austin Co.'s)
In the fall of 1824 he was living on the Brazos River near Moses Shipman.
The census of 1826 classified Prater as a farmer and stock raiser aged over
50.
His househould included his wife, Maria, three sons, and a daughter.

I live in The Woodlands, Montgomery Co., TX.
I think that William Prater married Mrs. Dorothy (Smith) Bailey sometime
between 1838 & 1850.
Dorothy joined her husband near the Brazos River in present day Brazoria Co.
about the same time as William Prather settled within close proximity.
He husband died in 1832 in Brazoria Co., which left her the heard of her own
household with 3 children. In 1838, not yet remarried, she was awarded a
league and labor for meeting the 1835 qualification date as the heard of a
household in Texas. She then married Mr. Prather. At the time of their
marriage they would have been in their 60's.
The time window for this marriage would have been after Sept. 1838 and
before May, 1851.
The May 1851 date is the date when the 1850 census takers finally got around
to her daughters home in Galveston and enumerated her there as Dorothy Prater,
age 65). (Dorothy Prater is my husbands gr.gr.gr.gr.grandmother).
Evidence indicates William Prater (Prather) had a daughter named Sarah "Sally"
with whom Dorothy had a continuing relationship.
On 23 Nov., 1843 in Galveston Co., TX. Sarah married James Blandin (her
surname transcribed in a typed, published book of Texas marriages as Prateo).
It appears that Sarah & James divorced. On 4 Dec., 1850 in Harris Co., TX.
Mrs. Sally P. Blandine married Hugh Kelly. On 31 Mar., 1851 in Harris Co.,
TX. James Blandine married Josephine Fitzhenry.
We don't know how many children she and James Blandine had but we do know
that she had a daughter named Catherine "Keziah" .... born in 1848 & a
daughter named Mary Ann ... born in 1850. The girls used the surename of
Kelly (the girls were age 1 & 2 when their mother married Hugh Kelly).
Years later Keziah would testify in court that her mother died when she and
Mary Ann were infants and that Hugh Kelly had no other children.
On the 1860 census in Brazoria Co., Mrs. Dorothy (Smith) Bailey Prather
(her surename now transcribed "Pritter" rather than Prather) age 75 was in
the home of Hugh Kelly, age 50, with Sally's two daughters Keziah (age 12)
& Mary Ann (age 10).
Hugh Kelly's home was located near the point where the Harris, Brazoria and
Galveston county lines intersect.
Dorothy's daughter, Nancy Bailey, and her husband Jacob Thomas were then
living nearby (just accross the county line in Galveston Co.)
They all lived near Clear Creek.
Hugh Kelly's relationship with Keziah and Mary Ann turned bitter in the
1870's. (He was a cattle-raiser). Court testimony shows he told his
friends and business associates he was disowning his daughters for
"marrying negros". When Hugh Kelly died in 1883 he left his entire estate
to friends in the cattle business. Keziah, age 37, contested the Will in
court in 1885. She still used the surname Kelly (evidently she never
married). It is not clear if she had children. Her sister Mary Ann had
already died leaving three sons and one daugher (Howard Williams, Henry
Williams, Horace Williams, & Tudor "Tudy" Williams). Mary Ann had married
Richard William (prsumably a longtime neighbor. (his family lived two doors
down from Dorothy Prather's daughter in Galveston Co.)
It is unknown as to the race of Richard Williams......
(research reveals that there were several racially-mixed families in the area)
Richard William married 2nd to a young woman named "Molly".... who helped
raise his children in Houston.
When Keziah sued on her own behalf and on behalf of her sisters children,
she lost and none of them received anything.

In 1819 William Ward erected the first sawmill in Texas between the Ironosa
and Attoyac Rivers, and Lewis Holloway constructed the second one in the
same area soon after. Cotton cultivation began in 1825, and the following
years John Sprowl and John A. Williams built the first local gins.
During the Fredonian Rebellion in 1827, the citizens of Ayish Bayou, invited
to challenge the Mexican goverment with Haden Edwards chose instead to abandon
their little villiage and flee from his forces as well as those of the Mexican
army. Only Alexander Horton, STEPHEN PRATHER, and Edward Teel stayed
behind, raising a combined force of Anglos and Indians that drove the rebels
from the vicinity.

Neches Saline, Texas:

By 1830 there were two trading posts on the salt plain, one belonging to
Chates H. Simms and the other to James Hall.
In March 1833 Bean signed a contract with Stephen Prather to start a salt
business, but Prather died in June. His plan was to copy the indian art
of taking water from salt wells and allowing the water to evaporate,
leaving usable salt.

Stephen Prather owned a trading post at Ayish Bayou.
Stephen convinced his nephew, Thomas Freeman McKinney, that the
Nacogdoches area was the best area for trade.
Thomas McKinney whose mother was Eleanor Prather, sister of Stephen Prather.
Thomas McKinney had one sister, Euphemia McKinney Austin and his two brothers
James Prather and Charles Chastian McKinney in Travis Co., TX. in the 1850's.

Thomas traveled widely; lived Christian Co., KY. 1811 to 1818, by 1822 he
and allied kin had moved to Southern IL. and Randolph Co., MO., in 1823
he went to Santa Fe and then Chihuahua, Durango, Saltillo, and Baxar,
in 1824 he received a league of land on the Brazos River from Stephen
F. Austin (the "Old 100, Austin Colony"), but by 1827 he was with his
uncle Stephen Prather at Nacogdoches where Thomas kept a store on the
square. In 1830 he traded in Cotton and piece goods traveling by keelboat up
the Neches and Angelian Rivers to Saltillo and traded them for livestock
and specie. In 1830 he moved to San Felipe and continued trading to the
south. He also had interest on the lower Trinity, where Michael B. Menard
developed a sawmill. In 1834 he bacame senior partner with Samuel May
Williams. Williams supplied the bookeeping and commercial contacts in the
United States, while Thomas collected and shipped the cotton.
In 1835 They used their credit to help finance the Texas Revolution, to
the amount of $99,000, which was never repaid in full.
His ranch became "McKinney Falls State Park.

Stephen Prather, early colonist, merchant, and soldier, was born in Mercer
Co., KY. He was married in Natchez, MS.
He was a merchant in Harrisburg, LA. from 1810 to 1820. He served as a Colonel
under Gen. Andrew jackson at the battle of New Orleans.
He moved in 1820/1 to the Ayish Bayou District, now San Augustine Co., TX.
He owned and operated an Indian trading post at the forks of the Angelina and
Neches Rivers, but was a resident of the Ayish Bayou District.
In Dec. 1826, when all the other settlers of the area fled during the
Fredonian Rebellion, Stephen Prather, Edward Teel, and Alexander Horton, with
Prathers two sons, Stephen E. and Thomas Freeman Prather, Ross Bridgers, James
Bridgers Sr., James Bridges Jr., Peter Galloway, John McGinnis, and sixty
Indians took the Fredonians' Fort and 200 soldiers by surprise with firing
a shot.
A bronze marker on Highway 21, Route of the old San Antionio Road, in San
Augustine commemorates Stephen Prather's actions in the "battle of Fredonia".

He was born in Parish of Kentucky, Lincoln Co.,Va. (now Mercer Co., Ky)
in 1782 and later moved to Nacogodoches, Texas where he died in 1833.
He lead the decisive battle at the battle of "New Orleans". His success was
largely due to the support he alone gained from the Indians, who fought under
his command. Texas awarded him 4000 acres for his services.
