Beatric e de Mandeville,sister of Geoffrey 1st Earl of Essex,and by her,who was stated to be 80 years of age in 1185,had issue.

!brother and heir-male.Born before 1140.He had a Protracted suit with Geoffrey Fitzpiers,husband of his niece Beatrice,for the lands of the Earldom of Essex,1st Dec.1194 (Rot.Cur,Regis I.p 129).and he is still recorded as owing 7000 marks for tha t inheritance as late as 1202 (Rot.Canc.3 Joh.m 9).although Geoffrey Fitzpiers had been
recognised as Earl of Essex since Easter 1190.(Rot.Pip.2 Ric.1.Essex and Herts).In 1210,he answered,apparently
as heir,for 27 knights fees of the Barony of Wachelin Maminot,of Greenwich,Berling,etc.,Kent.(Lib.Rub.fo 132Ad
Kent),and confirmed the grants of the said Wachelin,whom he styles his ancestor,to Begeham Abbey.(mon.Ang.II,640a n 30).The exact relationship is unknown,but the Maminot property continued in this family during the succeeding generations.He m (1), before 1180,Alice,dau.and co-heir of John de Cheney,and widow of Hugh de Piris (Genealogist,N.S.vol XVII p 9;Eyton,Shropshire,III 362) by whom he had issue,Geoffrey — Alice de Vere. on 5th Aug.following had livery of his father's lands.He joined the Barons against John,and was one of the Guardians of Magna Carta.All his lands were granted to Peter de Creon,17th Oct.1215.On 9th Nov.1215,with Richard Earl of Clare and Robert Fi tsWalter,he had lettersof safe conduct to come to speak with the royalist delegates,regarding peace between the king and the barons.Having returned to fealty.he had restoration,14th Sep.1217.He was present at the seige of Bytham Castle in 1321;an d on 20th Oct.1221,had a grant for a weekly
market at Sawbridgeworth,Herts.He confirmed his father's grants to the Hospital of St John,granting the manor of Saddlescombe in exchange for West Greenwich,which his father had formerly given;and also confirmed the grant to
