p. 65 "When John S. Prather had established his newspaper and his home in
Atlanta ["The New Era"] . . . he undertook the publication of a Ladies
Gazette, selling his "New Era" to pay for the new venture."

p.71 "She [his wife, Susan Verdery Prather] . . . secured for her husband a
position with the Franklin Publishing Company . . and he remained with them
for forty-four years." [e.g., from 1870 until 1914]

p. 83 Quoting and obiturary of John S. Prather:
"John Smith Prather, Confederate Veteran, pioneer Atlantan and business man
was one of the finest types of the true gentleman of the Old South. The story
of his life reads like a page from the history of that period and its splendid
triumph in the transitional period that made the New South of today. Until a
month ago, he was connected with the Byrd Printing Company. . . John S.
Prather was a charter member of the Fulton County Confederate Veterans
organized to greet Jefferson Davis on the occaion of his last visit to
Atlanta. He was also a charter member of the Camp Wheeler, U.C.V. and was
commander of the camp. He was regarded as one of the most active and
influential Confederate veterans in the South."

. . . on the gates of the Decatur Cemetery where John s. Prather's body lies.
It commemorates a sucfdessful cavalry engagement, led by Col. Prather during

He is near Hardeeville, S.C.. He has been recommended for promotion. I am
going to see the President for him tomorrow. Old Wad is doing Jack (Col.
John Prather) very mean and he says he will quit the service before he will
serve under him and I don't blame him."

P. 65 "Lt. Col. John S. "Jack" Prather who in the latter part of the war
commanded the 8th Confederate Cavalry Regt., assigned to Wade Hampton's
Cavalry Corps. (see official records, ser. 1,XLIV, 934; XLVII, pt. 1, 1065. He
married Mrs. Akin's sister." (Mrs. Akin's sister = Mary Frances Verdery,
daughter of Augustus Nicholas Verdery and Susan Hampton Verdery.

Ala. census (19 Sept., 1850 page 269)

James L (lawrence?) Williams was also living in the household age 31 from GA.
James L. Williams married Georgia Brantley daughter of Green Duke Brantley and
Elizabeth Holifield of N.C. June 1, 1854 in Lafayette, Chambers Co., Ala at
the home of Georgia's brother-in-law, Johnson Jones Hooper.

Reference is made to a Williams and J.L.Prather in the book "Alias Simon
Suggs by W. Stanley Hoole, on the life of Johnson Jones Hooper, brother-in-law
of Georgia Brantley Williams.

Page 68: "On Sunday August 19, 1849, as usual he sent to LaFayette the
twenty-second weekly number of his "Chambgers Gossip" to Bates, a long pot
pourri about Chambers Co. conditions which contained the significant
information that his old friend Joseph A. Holifield (brother of Georgia
Williams mother, Elizabeth Holifield Brantley) and Williams, "a practical
printer", had purchased the LaFayette Sun, a local weekly, changed the name to
Chambers County Tribune and employed him as editor.

Page 215: (Endnote of Chaper 4;84) Chambers Co. Record of Commissioners Court
August 20, 1849 - Dec., 1868, IV, n.p. under date of Aug. 15, 1853, has
notation that Holifield & Hooper were paid $12 for advertising by the county,
W.B.Wood, Jr. of Lafayette, Ala. has a receipt dated 9 Nov., 1852, signed by
"Chambers Tribune, Holifield & Hooper." The invoice is to J.L. Williams and
marked "Paid".

Jmes L. & Georgea Williams Dau., Mary "Mollie" Hooper Williams, was born in
Chambers Co., Ala. in 1856 and they moved to Winn Parish, LA. in about 1859.
They had 3 other children, all born in LA. Kate, James Lawrence and Charlie.
In 1870, the family moved to Hunt Co. , TX. and James L. died in 1875.
