"On motion, Archalous Prater, about 70 years of age, personally appeared in
open court and made oath that he was acquainted with Joel Mears and in his
lifetime and that Margaret, (formerly Margaret Estes) and deponet further
states that on about the 30th Sept., 1827 he being an authrozed minister of
the Gospel, married the said Margaret to the said Joel, dec'd, and states that
sometime in the latter part of the year 1835 the said Joel Mears deceased in
Warren Co., TN."

Looking at census and other records his listed age puts his birth year
at between 1766 and 1769. His parents were married in/or about 1768,
thus it is most likely his birth date is after 1768.

may or may not show the correct date of their marriage.

his heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land lying and
situated on the head waters of Tumbling Creek in the County of Humphrey and
state of TN. and containing by astimation one hundred acres entered in the
name of JOHN PRATER and granted unto him in the year of 1827. To have and
to hold and to hold the above mentioned tract of land for his own use and
special benefit and every part thereof.

Tax list show that John Prater Sr. must have died between 1840 and 1842.

In a letter written to Gary Benton Prather via American Online Computer
network 21 June, 1997 from Bob Prater of Tulsa, Okla.:

Elizabeth Ann Prater is listed in the 1900 Maries Co., MO. census as living in
the household bo her son Naploeon Prater (See 1900-MO Film 874 EnuberDist. 73
Maries County's Boone Township Dwelling 211 Family 218). Her date of birth is
listed Feb., 1822 with place of birth TN and mother and father's place of
birth TN. I believe that is in error. Her father was Henry V. Warren (c.
1785) and mother Barbara... Their places of birth are listed as VA. in
earlier census records. However, Henry Warren was in Warren Co., TN possibly
as early as 1814. I have no marrieage date for Henry and Barbara but their
first recorded child was Elizabeth Ann, born 1822.

Henry and Barbara had all but one of their children in TN. He and the family,
less Elizabeth Ann, moved to Miller Co., MO. abt 1840-41. Elizabeth had
married Benjamin Prater in 1839 and stayed in TN.

I tracked Benjamin up to 1860. In 1870 his oldest son, William, was still in
TN. but the rest of Benjamin's family had left Warren/Cannon County. In 1870,
I have two of Benjamin's sons (Henry V. in Osage Co., MO. and Thomas Dillard
in Maries Co., MO.) This goes along with family stories of these two family
members migrating out of TN after the Civil War. Thomas Dillard Prater,
sometime after 1870, migrated to Osage, Indian Territory (Okla.) near Hominy,
Okla. for his health. Stories goes from some of his descendants that he had
bad lungs from the war and left MO. for the dry climate in Okla.

I cannot find Benjamin and his other children in 1870 or 1880. The next thing
I find is his wife Elizabeth Ann prater listed as the mother of Napoleon
Prater living in napolenon's household.

My dad, Leonard Prater, told me he can remember his grandfather Herny V.
Prater and Henry's Brother napoleon Prater taking Elizabeth Ann (Known as
Becky Ann) to a train station in Dixon, MO. in a wagon when dad was about 3 or
4 years old, for her trip to Okla. to visit her family in Northeast Okla.
That would have been about 1901/3. She was going to Vinita, Okla. where her
youngest son Samuel was going to meet her.

Later, I found from Samuel's son, Nelson Prater, that his father Samuel picked
her up at the train station and she went to Samuel home in Chelsea, Okla.
She suffered a stroke there and lay in a coma for about two weeks and died.
Nelson and Nelson's cousin Velma (Youngblood) Klamm told me that "Granny" was
buried in West Adair Cem. Velma took me to her grave where she is buried
beside her Youngblood and Prater descendants. Benjamin is not there however.

I've looked in counties where their descendants lived thinking that Benjamin
and Elizabeth Ann may have lived near their children in 1870/80. I can't find
them over that 20 year period. I suspect that when Benjamin died, wherever
that was, that his widow Elizabeth Ann moved to MO. to be near her Prater and
Warren kinfolk. Her Warren family had moved back there in 1840/1 and two of
her sons werer living in MO. at the time.

I'm lost as to where Benjamin spent his last days after the war..... three of
his sons had been in the war and two had moved to MO. to be near their Warren
Grandparents. His family scattered after that war, probably from the turmoil
back in Warren County, TN.
Benjamim and his brother Thomas had been deeded a 350 acre farm and
"Millhouse" from their father Archelus in 1852 in Warren Co., TN.
I have a copy of the court record and a copy of the estate sale if you would
like one. I can find no record of how they desposed of that property though.

Thomas M. Prater died before 9 Nov., 1866 without a Will.

Thomas Prator:
Died before 28 Mar., 1867 as shown in the suit of Benjamin Prator vs. Josiah
(Joseph) Prator. Publication has been made for the non resident defendants.
They have failed to answer with the exception of Allen Youngblood & Wife.
Thomas Prator died intestate in Warren Co. and complainant was appointed his
administrator. Said (decd.) died siezed and possessed of one half interest in
a certain tract of land conveyed to them in their joint names by their father
Archable Prator. There is but one debt claimed against Said Thomas by
Elizabeth Prator. (Warren Co., TN. Chan. Court Min. 3/617)

Thomas Prater and Letty were in Cannon Co., TN. in 1850, they were in KY.
from 1857 up to 1863, and shows in Warren Co., TN. 16 July, 1866
when he purchased 40 acres of land recorded Warren Co., Deed Book #2 p. 205
"I G.W.F.Wale, have this day bargained and sold to Thomas Prator, a tract
or parcel of land, containing by estimation 40 acres, be the same more or
less, being in the county of Warren, on the head waters of the Barren Fork
Dist. 11 State of TN., for the sum of $150.00. One bay mare paid in hand, and
one note for $25. due the 24th of Dec., 1867. The said land being Warren Co.
Dist. 11 State of TN. it bounded as follows. Beginning on a black oak the
North Esast corner of the Dabney Sandridge tract of land; thence South on the
original line 72 1/4 poles to a black oak, thence west 89 1/4 poles to a
stake; Thence North to the original line between Wale and Caroline Sandridge
to a stake 72 1/4 poles, thence east 89 1/4 poles to the beginning; which the
said Prator has paid me in hand one bay mare, and executed his note to me for
$25., due the 24th Dec., 1867, including all land and tenements in said
boundary. To have and hold the same to the said Prator his heirs and assigns
forever.... July the 16th 1866."

Notes:

He became very ill while on the trip to Texas from TN., a family took him in
and nursed him back to health.
He stayed with this family and moved into the Ft. Arbuckle, Indian Territory
(Davis, Okla.) with them.
He worked for Henry de Courtney, running a ferry where Mud Creek and the Red
River met.
He lived about 1 1/2 miles west of the site of Ft. Arbuckle, Indian Territory
The old Ft. Arbuckle is located about 5 miles west of present Davis, Okla.
His two children were born there.
He named his daughter's middle name for the Lindberg family that took him in
and nursed him back to health.
His daughter, Rose Lindberg Prater, married the son of Alexander and Sarah
(Smith) Gregory.
Alexander and Sarah Gregory ran a trading post at "Pauls", Indian Territory,
Now Pauls Vally, Okla. They died there in about 1887/1888.

Martin Prater tripped on a footbridge going to the ferry bardge that he
operated. He fell and almost drowned but he died within a few days of
his injuries.

Land for the Prater Family Cem. was donated by Moses Prater, but some old
timers say that the land was once owned by Moses Prater's grandfather,
Archelus Archibald Prater.
The cemetery can be found:
From Woodbury, Cannon Co., TN. go South 4 miles on Hwy 53; turn East on
Icomium Rd. (Hwy 281) and go 1.2 miles. The Prater Cem. is located on the
North side of the road.
Among some locals the old cemetery is known as Mears Cem.
Moses and his wife, Lucinda, are buried in the cem. but there are no markers
for their graves.

Notes:

In 1888, when Houston and Sarah Youngblood and their family
were living on a farm near Evansville, Ark. a neighbor stopped by
while on his way to town and asked if Sarah would like to go with them.
Sarah decided to go, leaving all the children at home except for the infant,
Thomas.
While on the way to town a sudden storm developed and a tornado suddenly
came up on them. Sarah and the neighbor were found dead, killed by the
tornado, but the infant, Thomas, was never found.

Sarah's husband died a year later.

Betty and Lucy were put in an orphanage, where they contracted TB and died.
Alberta was adopted, and lived most of her life in Evansville and Greenland,
Ark.
The five boys were put out on work farms. After the boys were grown they found
each other and often visited with each other until their deaths.

Prater.

"Marine Guarded Three Presidents"
Sergt. Prater, Retiring after 20 years, was all over the world,
Met the Kaiser and Menelik. Settles down for good as Guard of Bank
of Newark.

Sgt. John L. Prater of 720 Franklin Ave. Nutley, N.J. vowed many time that if
he ever doffed the uniform of the US Marine Corps he never wold get into
another. he said he was "all shut" of uniforms. Then, just as if to play a
huge joke on him, fate stuffed his six feet of height and 187 pounds of brawn
in a new bank in Newark.
Whatever may be his experience in life from now on, bank robbers and crusty
patrons to the contrary notwethstanding. Sgt. Prater's life cannot be any more
hazardous or more interesting than it has been the last 20 years.
20 years means 5 hitches in the Marine corps. In that 20 years he has done
things many another man of twice his age -- he is only 42 -- has not even
attempted.
He is the only one among 115,000,000 other Americans who has been personal
guard of three US Presidents, who has completed 5 trips around the world, who
has put foot on nearly every naval ship of the USA, who has done guard duty
over the body of Admiral John Paul Jones, who has visited every port of the
world in which a naval ship could enter and who has stepped from the torrid
zone to the temperate zone and from that to the frigid zone as easily as the
average commuter boards a train for home.
Sgt. Prater has rideen a camel across the Sahara Desert and has sailed up the
Congo River. He has been reviewed by two Kings of England and has saluted the
former German Emperor.

Admiral of Ship is a Girl Now....
Now he has retired from service after 20 years, has built a California style
bungalow on a wooded knoll in Nutley andi sis commander of his own ship.
He is not an Admiral, however. That position is left to Priscilla Louise
Prater, who is 4 1/2 years old, and has her hands full attending to a large
family of dolls. That is the occupation of the "Admiral", while Sgt. and
Mrs. Prater are reading poultry journals.

20 Years is not long when one looks back on it, Sgt. Prater says. He has been
out of service only a few weeks, but he says it seems almost yesterday that he
was a youngster in Davis, Okla., when that was the Indian Territory and old
Fort Arbuckle had recently been replaced by the newer Fort Sill.

Out there in those days there was military atmosphere in abundance. John
Prater's grandfather, Henry C. De Courtney, had been a Major in the Miexican
War and wounds prevented him from enlisting in the Civil War, so he became a
Government contractor. The De Courtneys were some of the first white settlers
in the Indian Territory. Johns paternal grandfather was of a less warlike
career.
He was, until he died, Prof. Prater, teaching romance languages in the
University of Heidelberg, Germany

(NOTE FROM RESEARCHER: This last statement about Prof. Prater is NOT true,
but Henry De Courtney did supply Ft. Arbuckle with food stuffs, such as hogs,
beef, garden veggies and possibly mules or horses. Johns grandfather, Joseph
Prater is listed as a farmer in the 1870 White Co., TN. census at age 68.)

When Theodore Rossevelt recruited his Rough Riders for the Spanish War, John
was 16 years old. He made application for the Rgt. and was rejected as too
young.
He bided his time. 5 years later, on 5 Sept., 1903, he enlisted in Kansas
City as the first Marine coming form the Indian Territory.
He was fortunate in the nature of travel in those first 6 months. Almost
immediately after his enlistment he was ordered to New York and went aboard
the od Brooklyn, which st out for Mediteranean waters. 20 years ago
Christmans, Sgt. Prater, passed by the Holy Land. There was trouble in that
section then, as there has been in other times and seasons. The Turks were
killing the Syrians and the Brooklyn was sent to prevent bloodshed. For many
weeks, Sgt. Prater stood guard over the Presbyterian School for Syrian Girls
in Beirut.

Following that experience there came orders to proceed to Abyssinia to make a
treaty with King Menelik, Sgt. Prater was selected to accompany the official
party, which traveled by gunboat through the Suez Canal and Red Sea to Jibuti
on the Gulf of Aden, thence by camel train to Menelik's capital.
"Menelik was a rattling big ebony fellow", said Sgt. Prater, "and his style
was a silf hat and a breech clout. But he was a King all right. Not one in
the thousands of his subjects diputed that fact. It would have been intesely
unforturnate for them if they had. Menelik received us in royal style, took
us hunting big game and was very courteous. I wonder if he would have done so
had our business been less official."
It was the report that Col. Thorpe, then Major, gave to President Roosevelt of
the expedition that kindled the first desire for big game in Africa, Sgt.
Prater said.
That same year, the the return trip, Sgt. Prater saw the then German Emperor.
The Brooklyn visited the Kiel Canal and the Kaiser came abouard. Full honors
were done him, with officers on deck saluting and the guard presenting arms.
Sgt. Parter said the Kaiser himself a tall man, was of excellent military
appearance and closely inspected every 6 footer he found.
But there was another mission to be done, this time the incident which gave
rise to Roosevelt's remark: "Perdicaris Alice or Raisuli dead."
Raisuli, and African bandit, had captured Ian Perdicaris, a former resident of
Trenton, and had held him for ransom. President Roosevelt sent out an
expedition which included Sgt. Prater. the expedition was unsuccessful in
getting the bandit out of the wilds and the ransom was paid instead. But the
Sgt. remembers well the nights in the jungle, with wild amimans howling near
the water holes and the awe the strange noises inspired.

It seemed that Sgt. Prater was preordained to live up to the legend: "Join the
Marines and see the world."
He was constantly traveling. His next look at a King, after seeing Menelik
was in England in 1905, when he saw King Edward driving in Hyde Park. It was
that year the USA decided to bring back the body of John Paul Jones, which had
lain buried in France for 115 years.
The Marine Corps was called on for a guard detail. Sgt. Prater his penchant
for the unusual skill at work, was selected as one of 6 that had the honor and
until the body was placed in the Naval Cem. at Washington. Sgt. Prater stayed
beside the coffin. Afterward he was trasferred to the Marine barracks in
Washington. President Roosevelt needed an orderly. He remembered the
youngster who had tried to enlist in the Rough Riders and had him detailed.
By that time Sgt. Prater already had been one of a party of 125 officers and
men received by the Pope in Rome, had seen King Alfnso in Madrid and had been
present when the Khedive of Egypt reviewed the Royal Irish Fusileers, the
British troops stationed in Egypt. he also had met Richard Harding Davis at
Cape Town in South Africa and Jack London in Sitka, Alaska.
Prater's duty with Roosevelt was continued to the Presidency of Taft.
Three times he visited the Canal Zone with each of those Presidents, the first
time viewing the ruins of the canal left by the French, and later seeing the

Notes:

David served as Pvt. in the Cival War on the Union side. He was in Co. E. 5th
Tenn. Calv. from 12 Aug., 1864 to 14 Aug., 1865. Recieved a hernia on the left
side at Tulahoma, TN. while on active service carrying a dispatch to Gen.
Millrey on or about 16 Apr, 1865. Injury sustained from falling on a saddle
horn. Honorable discharged at Pulaskey, TN. and given pension in 1890. After
descharge he returned to Cannon Co., TN. and married Nancy Maxey. Farmed in
Cannon Co., until spring 1870 then moved to Shannon Co., MO. They returned to
their farm in Cannon Co., TN. spring 1871 traveling by oxen. Spring of 1875
they returned to their farm in Shannon Co., MO. that they formally lived on,
this time traveling with a team of gray mules. After Nancy's death in 1926
David remarried Mrs. Rosa Lee. Rosa couln't get the disability pension
reassigned to her after Davids death. Sarah was born in TN. but died in
Shannon Co. MO. on their first visit and is buried in Short Cem. near Bunker.
David moved back to MO. to "be with our little girl".
