History of Lucas Co., Ia.:

Mr. Samuel Prather, of Cedar Township owned the southeast corner of the
southeast quarter of section 25, adjoining the county line of Monroe.
Foreseeing that the county would be populated, and that towns must exist, he
concluded to lay out a town.
He employed Nelson Westcott, on the 17th and 18th of October, 1852, who
surveyed and platted his forty acres into twelve blocks containing 88 lots,
and an additional large one containing over three acres. This lot he called on
the plat "lone tree lot" because of a large oak tree which for many years
stood on it, and was the only tree of any size in the neighborhood. The blocks
were distinguished by letter of the alphabet.
The town was christened Lagrange.

Her grandson, Melvin Moore Diggs:
The Attorney General's Award for Exceptional Service, the highest award of the
Department of Justice, was presented to Melvin M. Diggs in Dec., 1968 in
recognition of his outstanding service as the Court-appointed United States
Attorney for the Northern District of Texas from Feb. 23, 1965 through June
30, 1968.
Diggs also served as the first Assistant to four different U.S. Attorneys
during his years with the office. Born in Trenton, Fannin C., TX., he
attended Weslaco High School near McAllen, where he was calss salutatorian,
yearbook editor, senior class president, trombone soloist, and lettered in
five sports.
As a sophomore end on the football team at Texas Christian University, Diggs
caught the first varsity pass thrown by the famed Slingin Sammy Baugh - but
broke an ankle on the touchdown catch and missed the remainder of the 1934
season. Although not a starter after his injury, Diggs earned three football
letters on outstanding Horned Frog teams. Diggs worked his way through TCU
with two jobs and still found time to serve both as president of the senior
class and at the same time president of the student body. He also worked his
way through Georgetown Law School in Washington, D.C. with a job at the
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.
He was admitted to the Texas Bar in `944. After serving in the Army
Counterintelligence Corps during World War II. Diggs handled legal duties with
the Office of Price Administration, the Veterans Administration, and the
Federal Housing Expeditor. He also was a civilian special investigator for
the Air Force and Supervised 50 criminal investigators at 8 air bases in
Texas, before beginning his longtime service with the U.S. Attorney's Office
by joining the staff of U.S. Attorney Heard Floore as an Assistant.
After his retirement from the U.S. Attorney's Office, Diggs accepted an
assignment to handle during 1975-80 the implementation in the Northern
District of Texas of the "Speddy Trial Act".
He and his wife, Virginia, have three daughters, Susan, Nancy, and Ann, and a
son, Douglas.
The Diggs family has long attended the University Christian church, and he has
credited "going to a Christian School" as molding his whoe life.

Passed Away Thursday Evening of Last Week; Came here 37 years ago.

Daniel Wilson Prther was born near Des Moines, IA., Feb. 14, 1866, and passed
away at his home in Ruthven, IA. Feb. 2, 1939, at the age of 72 years, 11
months, 18 days. His parents were Martin & Elizabeth Prather and when a
young man he moved with his folks to Audubon Co., where he grew to manhood.

On Feb., 25, 1890, he was united in marriage to Mary Evaline Calloway and
eight children, three boys and five girls, were born to this union.

The family lived in Audubon and Polk Co., where the deceased was engaged in
the lumber business, until 1902 when they moved to a farm on the north side of
Silver Lake, south of Ruthven. They lived for a short time on a farm near
Gillett Grove, and then returned to the vicinity south of Ruthven. In 1934
they retired from farming and moved to Ruthven where the deceased made his
home until his death. Mr. Prather served as town marshal in Ruthven for about
three years. Following a paralytic stroke last Sept. he was forced to give up
this position, and while he rallied from the attack and was abel to be about
our town again, he had lost so much of his strength and vitality he was unable
to survive a recent illness with pneumonia and passed away last Thursday
evening at 8:30.

He is survived by his devoted wife, three sons, Claude & Howard of Ruthven and
Harold of Graettinger, IA., and four daughters, Mrs. D.D. Waterman of Ruthven,
Mrs, Arthur Roberts of Royal, IA., Mrs. Roy Broadie of Estherville, IA., and
Mrs. Walter Pitcher of Emmetsburg, IA. One daughter, bertha, passed away in
1928. Mr. Prather is also survived by one brother, Ed Prather of Rutherven,
one sister, Mrs. Annie Howard of Des Moines, IA., 21 grandchildren and on
great grandchild. Mr. Prather was a member of the Meth. church.

Daniel was a very tall man with wide shoulders and jet black hair.
He was Sheriff of Emmetsburg, (Ruthven) IA.
When he died in 1939, it may well have been from a head injury he received in
the line of duty .... legend has it he was hit in the head by an escaping
prisoner.
According to statements his son made to the family, the undertaker had to turn
him on his side so he'd fit in the coffin due to his being so wide through the
shoulders.
