    During the Civil War, John Aaron Prather was gone from home for long periods,
    fighting Mo. Red Legs (Bushwackers). Ther were attempting to keep these
    renegades from thir homes, but as in the case of his father and uncle austin
    Prater, they were not always successful.
    During these periods his wife and his children had not only the household to
    take care of, but the farm as well.
    As a result, his wife's health was broken.

    William Columbus Prater had his name legally changed to William Cornelius
    Prater ( Matuschak, Wa.)
    Accompanied by his brother, Felix, he left home at the age of 18. They
    headed for Ellensburg, Wa. by riding frieght rail cars. They lived off of
    cabbage all the way, as this was the produce loaded on the rail cars.
    They arrived at Ellensburg (The Dalles), Ore. on 9 Oct., 1883.
    Their uncles, Felix, Moses, James, and Henry had left Polk Co., Mo. sometime
    earlier and settled for a time in Calif. but by this time Felix had passed
    away shortly after moving to Wa. with James.
    Moses stayed in Calif. but Henry eventually also settled in Wa.
    In 1897 William C. Prater left Ellensburg and went to Skahway, Alaska where he
    sold meat to the prospectors of the Alaskan gold rush.
    In 1902 he and his wife left Alaska and returned to Wa. and in 1904 they
    settled in Seattle, Wa. where he remained in the meat business until his
    death.

    James left Mo. in 1877, at the age of 17, and headed for Stockton, Ca.,
    where he stayed and worked before moving on to the State of Washington.
    He arrived in Ellensburg, Kittitas Co., in 1879. He was following three uncles
    who had gone west before him; Feliz Grundy Prater, the first Prater to head
    west and Moses Jay DPrater, who had followed Felix, and third, Henry Ortho
    Prater (called "Bud" & "Long Henry").
    James "Jim" Prater lived, raised a family, and died in the eastern part of
    the State of Washington. He was a prosperous farmer -- a man loved and
    respected by his family and community.
    He was the first of the Praters in the western part of our county to become
    interested in the Prater genealogy. To him we owe considerable credit, for it
    was he who laid the groundwork upon which we have tried to build. Later he
    was joined in his efforts by his brother William C. and his son James M.
    Prater II.
